POTENT LILLESHALL STUN RED-FACED AUDCO

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Audco edged a further point away from the King’s Head at the top of the Newport Pool League with a hard-earned 3-3 home draw against third-placed Lilleshall Sports Centre.

Several pre-match discussions dictated that a tense atmosphere prevailed at Bellman’s Yard before LSC pulled off a stunning draw. The outcome played right into the King’s Head’s hands and throws the title race wide open again.

Paul Trevor and LSC captain Dave Price were first into the cauldron, with former Newport Open Champion Trevor putting the home side one frame up. But Greg Heathcote levelled the scores by beating brother Anthony in an all-family affair in the second frame.

The Audco dropped talented team regulars Jack Jones and Tom Sayce for the crunch clash and, to emphasise the importance they had placed on the game, defending Newport Open Champion Colin Pink was drafted into the singles line-up.

But he came across a defiant Ben Longstaff, who rocked the establishment with a sensational win to put LSC 2-1 ahead. The tension was paramount as the league’s top player Lycett levelled the scores by getting the better of Nick Clewley in the fourth frame. By this time Longstaff and Greg Heathcote were in the zone and disposed of Pink and Trevor in the first doubles rack to set up the prospect of a sensational win.

It was not meant to be though and Price and Clewley were unable to clinch the all-important sixth frame, which Lycett and a reluctant Anthony Heathcote secured to earn the draw for the red-faced home side.

The Navy Club’s visit to the King’s Head was postponed, but the Boat Gnosall won 4-2 against the Junction B in a match that had been rearranged. The Junction A earned a 3-3 draw at the Sutherland Muxton in another closely-fought match between two ever-improving mid-table sides.

Shakespeare captain Mick Andrews began the strange tradition of putting his team’s pool balls in the dishwasher before the home fixture against the Wheatsheaf. The weird ‘ball tampering’ act seemed to do the trick, however, and the Upper Bar side regained third place in the league with a 4-2 win.

Would teams ensure that all match forms are returned to the Railway Tavern after games to ensure that league tables and player statistics are as accurate as possible. Please also text the result to 07831 123153.

Teams that have not paid annual fees are asked to do so within the next seven days, as end-of-season trophies need to be arranged and ordered.
