HERO HESTOR ROCKS LILLESHALL IN TABLE-TOPPING CLASH

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Telford businessman Matt Hestor was the hero of the hour for a triumphant Shakespeare side against a weakened Lilleshall Sports Centre team in the Newport & District Pool League last week. Hestor completed a seven-ball clearance from the break in the final frame to seal a crucial 4-2 victory for the title chasers against a third-placed LSC side.

LSC skipper Dave Price wilted under pressure to hand an opening frame win to Matt Hestor. Luke Jones and Ben Clewns made it 3-0 to the home side with wins over Greg Heathcote and Ben Longstaff, after Longstaff had jawed the black to pull a frame back.

Nick Clewley gave LSC hope with a win over Don Brennan and Heathcote and Longstaff pulled back to within a frame in the first of the doubles matches. But the Shakespeare’s Matt Hestor was the hero of the hour and snatched a dramatic win with a stunning seven-ball clearance from the break in the final frame, much to the delight of captain Mick Andrews. “It gave us the bragging rights over the Lilleshall boys for a few days,” said Andrews.

The King’s Head maintained a frame difference advantage at the top of the league with a 4-2 away win at Junction B, although Matt Collins admitted that it had been a bad day at the office for the Chetwynd End side.

An ecstatic Wheatsheaf claimed their first league win of the season against a shell-shocked Junction A. The draw specialists have only lost one game this season, although the 4-2 win at their ‘fortress’ lifted them to eighth. “The draw against the Audco has lifted the whole team,” said a spokesman. “We are going to make a late push for the title now!”

Form players Nigel Sandbrook got the home side off to a great start with a win over H Marklew and Ian Trevor made it 2-0 with victory over S Roycroft. The unbeaten K Rogers pulled a frame back for the visitors against Paul Skitt and I Mason levelled the match with victory over Big Al Harvey. But the Wheatsheaf dug deep in the two doubles’ matches – with Chris Cooper joining Sandbrook in the first pairing – to complete a memorable 4-2 win.

In the fourth of the week’s matches, the Boat climbed to fourth in the league table with a 4-2 home win against a plucky Navy Club side. The Gnosall team also have two games in hand over the second-placed Shakespeare team.
