KING’S HEAD MAINTAIN LEAGUE LEAD AS
SHAKESPEARE APPLY THE PRESSURE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The King’s Head maintained their lead at the top of the Newport & District Pool League with a hard-earned 4-2 win over the Sutherland at Muxton, but the Chetwynd End side’s league lead was reduced to mere frame difference by a rampant Shakespeare side.
They cruised to a second emphatic win in seven days with a 6-0 demolition of the Navy Club. The in-form Upper Bar side also scored the second bonus point of the season for their efforts. Luke Jones, Rich Young, Ben Clews and Mick Andrews did the damage in the singles against Gerry Nunn, Denis Holland, David Watson and Alan Pritchett, with Matt Hestor and Don Brennan joining in the rout in the doubles.
A defensive Matt Collins and Ian Perry got the King’s Head off to a cracking start with wins over Kim Worrall and Charlie Hayward. Mick Collins made a good clearance to beat Keith Warrington and Irene Whittingham made it 4-0 to the King’s Head with a win over G. Hayward.
But the Muxton side fought back to give a more realistic appearance to the scoreline with victories in both the doubles matches, as the King’s Head dream of a bonus point was quashed.
Lilleshall Sports Centre maintained their impressive run of form with a third successive 5-1 win against Junction B to leap into third place in the league. Neil Perkins and Greg Heathcote got the home side off to winning ways with closely-fought victories over Mick Ashforth and Terry Taylor.
Ben Longstaff pipped J Owen in a scrappy third frame and Nick Clewley sealed the points with the win in a tense affair against S Fletcher. But Taylor and Fletcher struck back in the second doubles’ match to prevent Lilleshall earning a much-needed bonus point for a whitewash.
The New Inn suffered a 4-2 home defeat against the Boat at Gnosall, who still have two and three games in hand over the table-topping sides and have only lost one game so far this season.
