LILLESHALL’S PRICE STARS IN REVENGE CUP WIN
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The shock of the first round of the Newport Pool Cup was a revenge win for Lilleshall Sports Centre over the table-topping King’s Head side that had crushed them 5-1 the previous week in the league.
Irene Whittingham got the league leaders off to a winning start with a black-ball game win over Neil Perkins, but Greg Heathcote levelled the scores with a win over Phil Emery. Ben Longstaff slugged out a grueller with Matt Collins to put Lilleshall ahead for the first time, but a marathon fourth frame between Lilleshall skipper Dave ‘Bezza’ Price and the in-form Neil Hallett ended with a re-rack after 20 minutes.
Safety play again dictated the strategy in the new frame, but Price kept his cool to wrap up a sensational win for the home team. Longstaff and Heathcote teamed up in the doubles to put the result beyond doubt with a fine win over Collins and Hallett.
In the other four cup matches played last week, the Shakespeare snatched a 4-2 win at the Wheatsheaf, the Audco managed to pip Junction B by the same score and the all-Staffordshire encounter between Junction A and the Boat at Gnosall ended in a 4-2 win for the Boat.
Meanwhile, the Sutherland Arms Muxton kick-started their league season with a 5-1 win over struggling New Inn. Charlie Hayward and K Warrington set the home team on their way and, although Mick Lloyd pulled a frame back for the visitors, a singles win for B Tunis and two doubles successes wrapped up the points for the Muxton side and moved them up to fifth in the league.
