LEGION A OVERCOME EARLY SCARE TO MAINTAIN LEAD

NEWPORT (Shropshire): League-leading Legion A maintained their excellent start to the new Newport Pool League season with a 1-5 victory at the Haberdashers Arms.

Away skipper George Allen had his belt undone by a number of savage snookers by Janet Lane, but that was as good as it got for the home team. Mick Manning, Chris Eaton and Simon Walley hit back to beat Nathan Shepherd and Jon and Ayla Mason and both doubles frames also fell to the defending champions.

King’s Head A maintained the pressure on Legion A with a comfortable 1-5 dismantling of Junction A. Graham Tigwell and George Smith started the rout with wins over Sion Richards and Steve Roycroft, but home skipper Hyla Marklew hit back to smash Irene Whittington. Edd Keenan made it 1-3 to the away side at the expense of Gordon Sidebotham and the introduction of Mick Collins in frame six helped the away side to both doubles racks.

King’s Head B remain a point behind the leaders after a hard-earned 4-2 win over the Navigation. Ryan Langford ousted Kyle Oldfield to make it 1-0, but Bailey Wright perforated Ian Perry’s progress to level. Luke Carter and Greg Quinn got the better of Dai Smith and Jamie Wright to make it 3-1, only for Bailey Wright and Oldfield to set up a thrilling finale by beating Quinn and Carter in rack five. Langford and Perry finally put the Gnosall side out of their misery in the last frame.

Legion Yaks threw away a 2-0 lead to earn a draw with the visiting Wheatsheaf. Russ Woodhouse and Neil Perkins earned the advantage with two tense frame wins over Nigel Sandbrook and Paul Skitt, but Dean Smith missed two golden chances to see off the in-form Ant Heathcote. Ross Richards-Jones was then undressed by Al Harvey as the ‘Sheaf levelled the score. Skitt and Heathcote then put the visitors into a 2-3 lead at the expense of Smith and Richards-Jones, but Perkins and Woodhouse rescued the point in a nervy final frame.

The Lamb at Wrockwardine Wood were held to a 3-3 draw by a stubborn Junction B. Ryan Penfold put the home team one up against Dave Blount, but the visitors hit back with wins for James and Ryan Morris over Noel Roberts and George Stokes. Matt Roberts levelled at the expense of Ruth Minton and honours were shared after a stalemate in the doubles frames.

Honours were also shared in the bottom-of-the-table clash between the Sutherland Arms and Legion B. Barry Smith and Brad Borrett put the away side into a surprise 0-2 lead at the expense of Jon Bailey and Karl Hanmer, but Jack Nagington and Damien Clarke beat Mark Kijuk and Kim Rigby to level. Hanmer and Nagington beat Smith and Borrett to make it 3-2, but Gareth Thomas and Clarke went down to Rigby and Kijuk in the final frame as the visitors sealed a deserved point.
