WALLEY BEATEN AS LEGION A MAINTAIN POOL LEAGUE LEAD
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Legion A maintained their one-point advantage at the summit of the Newport Pool League with a 1-5 victory at the Lamb in Wrockwardine Wood.
County A skipper George Allen made a winning start against Kris Lewis, but the defending champions were pegged back when John Stanley undid Simon Walley’s belt and cost the Legion player his winning start to the season. Mick Manning and Chris Eaton made it 1-3 with wins over George Stokes and Matty Roberts and the away side won both doubles frames.
King’s Head B dropped just one frame on their way to a 5-1 win over Legion B that put them in outright second place on frame difference. Ian Perry, Ian Swinnerton, Luke Carter and Greg Quinn sealed the points in the singles frames with wins over Barry Smith, Kim and Luke Rigby and Mark Kijuk, but Smith and Kim Rigby undressed Swinnerton and Quinn to win the fifth frame. Carter and Perry prevailed for the home side in frame six.
King’s Head A kept up the pressure on the Legion A with a hard-earned 2-4 win at the Haberdashers Arms. Mick Collins and Graham Tigwell put the visitors into a 0-2 lead, but Janet Lanen and Nathan Shepherd cost Irene Whittington and Edd Keenan their 100% winning starts to the season to level. George Taylor joined Collins to win rack five for the visitors and George Smith and Tigwell sealed the points in frame six.
The Wheatsheaf slithered to a 2-4 victory at the Sutherland Arms. Sam Sampson got the better of Nigel Sandbrook to put the home side in front, but wins for Paul Skitt, Al Harvey and Ant Heathcote over Jack Nagington, John Bailey and Damian Clarke followed for the visitors. Clarke and Simpson set up a nervy finale by winning the fifth frame, but it was a fast downhill run from then on when Sandbrook and Heathcote wrapped up the points.
Junction B suffered a 1-5 home defeat to Gnosall’s Navigation. James Morris made a winning start for the home side against Bailey Wright, but wins for Kyle Oldfield, Jamie Wright and Dai Smith over Ryan Morris, Dave Blount and Ruth Minton made it 1-3. The visiting quartet also won the doubles frames to move up to fifth in the table.
Legiion Yaks slumped to a 2-4 home defeat to Junction A in the absence of skipper Dean Smith, who was witnessing a rare Premier League win for Wolves. Away skipper Hyla Marklew got the Junction off to a winning start against Russ Woodhouse, only for Chris Nolan to redress the balance against Steve Roycroft. Wins for Tom Blount and Gordon Sidebottom over Ross Richards-Jones and Kevin Genner made it 1-3 and Marklew and Blount sealed the points in the first doubles frame by beating Woodhouse and Richards-Jones. Alan Hill joined Nolan to win the last frame for the Yaks.
