LEGION A CRUSH JUNCTION B TO MOVE CLEAR IN POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Legion A crushed Junction B without the loss of a frame to storm into a useful lead on frame difference at the top of the Newport Pool League.

Simon Walley, George Allen, Mick Manning and Mick Beech secured the points with singles wins over Ryan Morris, Dave Blount, James Morris and Ruth Minton and it was one-way traffic in the doubles frame as well.

King’s Head A claimed the bragging rights over their weakened B team rivals to stay second in the league. Greg Quinn ousted Graham Tigwell to put the B team ahead, only for Edd Keenan to hit back and stun Ryan Langford. Luke Carter then got the better of Mick Collins to make it 1-2 and the A team appeared to be struggling. Up stepped Irene Whittington to undo Rob Patterson’s belt to level the match and Collins, Keenan, George Taylor and George Smith secured the points in the doubles.

The Haberdashers Arms continued their good start to the season with a 2-4 victory at the Wheatsheaf that moved them up to third. Jon Mason and Janet Lane put the away side into a 0-2 lead with wins over Al Harvey and Paul Skitt, but Nigel Sandbrook and Mark Hodgkinson hit back to level at the expense of Mike Caswell and Nathan Shepherd. The excitement got too much for the home quartet, however, and they floundered under the pressure in the doubles as the villagers snatched the points.

Honours were shared in a tense contest between the Navigation and the Legion Yaks in Gnosall. Dean Smith put the away side in front with a win over Tim Dolloway, only for Kyle Oldfield to get the better of Kevin Genner to level. Hone skipper and league chairman Dai Smith was then silenced by the Yaks’ lamb Ross Richards-Jones before Bailey Wright edged his frame against Chris Nolan to make it 2-2. Jamie Wright helped the home side take a 3-2 lead in the doubles, but Smith and Nolan sealed a point in the last frame.

The Lamb at Wrockwardine Wood crushed Legion B to earn their first win of the season. Kris Lewis, George Stokes, Matty Roberts and John Stanley did the damage in the singles frames against Barry Smith, Mark Kijuk and Luke and Kim Rigby and there was no respite for the hone side in the doubles.

Junction A grabbed their first point of the season with a 3-3 home draw with the Sutherland Arms. Matt Cowap set the away side on their way at the expense of Tom Blount only for home skipper Hyla Marklew to redress the balance against Jack Nagington. Jon Bailey again put the away side in control with a good win over Steve Roycroft, but Gordon Sidebottom smashed Gareth Thomas to level and honours were shared in the doubles frames.
