THREE-WAY TIE AT TOP OF NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Legion A are separated by just one frame win from both the Kings Head A and B sides after week two of the Newport Pool League.
The defending champions, Legion A, dropped just one frame in a useful 1-5 win at the Navigation in Gnosall. George Allen and Simon Walley put the visitors into a 0-2 lead with wins over Tim Dolloway and Kyle Oldfield, before the home skipper Dai Smith stunned Mick Manning to claw a frame back. Jamie Wright fell to Mick Beech, as the visitors made it 1-3, and the introduction of Bailey Wright in the doubles could not turn around the home side’s fortunes.
King’s Head A routed the Lamb at Wrocwardine Wood. Edd Keenan, Graham Tigwell, Irene Whittington and Mick Collins did the damage in the singles frames with wins over Mark Ball, George Stokes, John Stanley and Mark Roberts and Andy Prinold teamed up with Collins to add to the home side’s woes in the final rack.
King’s Head B are tied with their A team counterparts after coming through a hard-fought 4-2 contest with the Wheatsheaf at Chetwynd End. Ian Swinnerton put the home side in front against Nigel Sandbrook, but there were some colly-wobbles for the Kings Head when Paul Skitt overcame Luke Carter and Ant Heathcote got the better of Lyndon Woodcock. Rich Sutton levelled with a win over Al Harvey and both doubles frames went in favour of the home side.
The Haberdashers Arms moved up to fourth in the table with a 4-2 win over bottom side Junction A. John Mason got the countrysiders off to a winning start over Norbury skipper Hyla Markew, only for Steve Roycroft and Gordon Sidebottom to put the away side in front with successes over Janet Lane and Ayla Mason. Mike Caswell levelled at the expense of Sion Richards and the home side prevailed in both doubles racks.
The depleted Legion Yaks needed to bounce back strongly from their opening night defeat to Legion A when they hosted the Sutherland Arms. Several of the away team were feeling under the weather, but it failed to prevent Matt Cowap getting the better of the Yak’s sacrificial lamb Ross Richards-Jones. Chris Nolan, Kevin Genner and Dean Smith won the next three racks for the home team with wins over Gareth Thomas, Jack Nagington and Jon Bailey. The doubles frames also went to the home side, despite the appearance of Karl Harmer and Jeremy Kramer for the away team.
Junction B moved up to fifth place with a 4.2 win over Legion B. The game was decided in the four singles frames, courtesy of wins for Dave Blount, James and Ryan Morris and Ruth Minton over Barry Smith, Ryan Rigby, a returning Mark Kijuk and Kim Rigby. The away side won both the doubles racks to restore order to the score line, despite the appearance of Carol Blackman in the fifth frame for the visitors alongside Blount.
