OMAN’S AL-ZUBAIR HEADS TO HOCKENHEIM TO KEEP IN RACE TRIM BEFORE MEXICO CITY’S PORSCHE SUPER CUP FINALE IN OCTOBER
HOCKENHEIM (GERMANY): With an eight-week gap between the penultimate race in the Porsche Mobil 1 Super Cup at Italy’s Autodromo Nazionale Monza and the final double-header in Mexico City at the end of October, Oman’s Al-Faisal Al-Zubair has decided to take part in this weekend’s concluding round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland at the Hockenheim circuit.
The Lechner Racing Team Middle East driver has shown considerable improvement on packed grids that have been a feature of the rounds of this year’s Porsche Mobil 1 Super Cup and bad luck has cost him even higher finishes at some of the meetings that are held in conjunction with the European races in the FIA Formula One World Championship.
The last outing in Monza was a case in point: Al-Zubair looked set to finish eighth overall before being hit from behind by a rival competitors that knocked him down to 16th.
Al-Zubair said: “I’m ready for the weekend and looking forward to Hockenheim. It’s a track that I like and it’s the German Championship, so I will be hopefully aiming for a strong result before we head to Mexico for the climax to the Super Cup next month.”
The final round of the prestigious German series on the legendary 4.574km circuit will see the Omani line up against another formidable field that includes the likes of Lechner Racing team-mate Michael Ammermüller, Thomas Preining, Larry ten Voorde and Dylan Pereira.
Christopher Zochling holds the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland lap record for the circuit with a tour of 1min 42.410sec set in race three in 2017. Two race meetings were held at the circuit last year in this championship: Dennis Olsen claimed wins in the first two race heats and Christian Engelhart and Thomas Preining shared a win apiece in the second one.
On-track action gets underway with practice at 14.15hrs (CET) on Friday (September 21) afternoon. Qualifying takes centre stage from 09.25hrs on Saturday morning and the first of the weekend’s two races fires into life at 15.35hrs.
The second of the races and the last of the 14 rounds of the championship starts at 10.35hrs on Sunday morning.
