OMAN’S AL-ZUBAIR SETS HIS SIGHTS ON TOP 10 FINISH
IN PORSCHE MOBIL 1 SUPER CUP RACE IN AUSTRIA
· Khalid Al-Wahaibi relishes debut in Porsche Mobil 1 Super Cup
· Defending champion Ammermüller takes six-point lead to Austria
SPIELBERG (AUSTRIA): Oman’s Al-Faisal Al-Zubair returns to the Red Bull Ring at Spielberg in Austria this weekend to take part in the third round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Super Cup on a track that he and fellow Omani Khalid Al-Wahaibi both raced on just three weekends ago during the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland meeting.
The Lechner Racing Team Middle East driver finished 11th at the last round of the prestigious Formula One support series on the street circuit in Monaco and is keen to add a top 10 finish to his tally on the demanding 4.318km circuit.
Al-Wahaibi will be taking part in his first ever round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Super Cup after earning Silver and Rookie success in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East last winter.
Defending champion Michael Ammermüller currently holds a six-point lead over a tying Nick Yelloly, Dylan Pereira and Jaap van Lagen in the championship standings after two rounds. Two points-scoring finishes have lifted Al-Faisal Al-Zubair to 1r4th position. The Sultanate of Oman lies ninth in the Nations League.
Al-Zubair said: “I am very excited for Austria. I have been on a bit of a holiday but I have been preparing for the race. It should be a good weekend. The target is a top 10 and then we have a double-header in Silverstone the following weekend. Two top 10s would be good.”
Al-Wahaibi added: “I am looking forward to heading back to the Red Bull Ring for my first round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Super Cup. This is the highest leel of Porsche racing I could possibly do and I am extremely excited to compete against the best drivers out there and see how the weekend works out.
“It’s obviously also an F1 support race. I am looking forward to learning the track with the F1 rubber. Typically it changes quite a lot but, hopefully, I can adapt to that. The last time I was at the Red Bull Ring, the results were not too bad. I am only here to learn and get the experience. That is the whole idea of me doing this. I am not doing the whole championship, so we will see how it goes.”
Drivers will carry out free practice at 18.45hrs on Friday evening in preparation for the qualifying session, starting at 13.25hrs on Saturday afternoon.
The third round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Super Cup then takes centre stage on the Red Bull circuit from 12.45hrs on Sunday.
