SOUTH RACING PREPARES TO RUN RICARDO PORÉM IN
PORTUGUESE NATIONAL CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP
ALGARVE (PORTUGAL): For the second successive weekend, German-based car preparations company South Racing is planning to run cars and drivers in two different motor sporting events in very different corners of the world.
South Racing will now run the talented Portuguese driver Ricardo Porém in Baja de Loulé, the opening rally of the six-round Portuguese National Championship of Cross-Country Rallies (CNTT), while also putting the finishing touches to two cars for next week’s Qatar Cross-Country Rally in the Middle East.
Porém – a three-time winner of Portugal’s Baja Portalegre – won the national title in 2014 and is excited about the new opportunity to join South Racing to run a Ford Ranger alongside his experienced navigator Hugo Magalhães, the winning co-driver in this year’s Qatar International Rally.
“We are delighted to be running Ricardo in the Ford Ranger this weekend,” said South Racing’s managing director Scott Abraham. “There is a good chance that he may run the full season of events in Portugal. We are looking forward to fighting for the Portuguese Championship. It is another challenge for us and another back-to-back weekend of rallies for South Racing.”
“I am really happy to be back in the national championship events,” said Porém. “My aim this year is to fight for the title and to try and win every event in my programme. I also hope to compete in international events in the FIA World Cup. I want to thank South Racing and my sponsors for the opportunity to join this project.”
The event being organised by the Automobile Club of the Algarve begins with scrutineering and administration checks today (Thursday) and features two runs through a Prologue stage in the Canil area, near Loulé. There will then be three selective sections through the Sierra do Caldeirão and tracks in the municipalities of the Algarve and Baixo Alentejo areas, totalling in the region of 300 kilometres.
The first selective of around 80km on Friday runs from Aldeia de Ameixial and finishes at Barranco do Velho. Saturday’s two sections run in the Cortelha-Ameixial-Martin Longo triangle and include over 200km of competition.
