WHEATSHEAF AND KING’S HEAD B POISED FOR TITLE SHOWDOWN

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Wheatsheaf and King’s Head B will decide the outcome of the Marstons Newport & District Pool League’s Plate title on the final evening of the season when they meet at Chetwynd Aston on June 22nd.

The ‘Sheaf started their penultimate match of the year against Honeysuckle Harriers with a one-point lead and ended the evening a point behind after being thrashed 6-0. Their Chetwynd End rivals got the better of Junction B, 5-1, to set up the final night showdown.

Dean Smith. Greg Quinn, Owen Rigby and Russ Woodhouse handed out the killer blows in the singles frames to Nigel Sandbrook, Andy Wakefield, Al Harvey and Paul Skitt and Neil Perkins joined the fray in the doubles with Quinn to make it 5-0. A Dean Smith pot on the black ruined the chance of a ‘Sheaf consolation frame.

The Horns’s chances of winning the title disappeared with a 1-5 home defeat to Newport Legion. A win over the Sutherland Arms next week with guarantee the Legion finish third, whatever the outcome of the result between the Harriers and the Stag – the Harriers are level on points with an inferior frame difference.

Jamie Wright started the car for the Horns against Mick Beech, but Ant Heathcote, Chris Eaton and Simon Walley made it 1-3 with wins over Martyn Holford, David Jolley and Dai Smith, even though Holford lost out in a re-racked second frame. The Legion quartet went on to win both doubles frames.

The Haberdashers Arms lost their chance of winning the Plate title after going down to the Sutherland Arms by the odd frame. Janet Lane stunned Jack Hooper to make it 0-1, but wins for Ian Swinnerton and Andy Fishwick over Nathan Shepherd and Dave Heeley made it 2-1. John Stanley left Wayne Dodd aghast to level, but the Tibberton side prevailed in both doubles frames, with Glenmorangie-backed veteran Tom Fisken on call for the all-important fifth rack.

The league-winning Stag faced a tricky clash at WWFC and earned their first draw of another successful campaign. George Allen beat fellow county player Craig Williams to put the Stag in front, but Mick Manning lost his first singles frame of the season to Stuart Robinson and WWFC levelled. Charlie Hayward got the better of Kevin Genner to make it 1-2, but Chris Nolan undid Neil Dale to make it all-square.

Dan Owen and Robinson lost out to Manning and Dale to place the Stag on course for the win, but Genner and Nolan earned a deserved draw for the home side at the expense of Allen and Hayward in the final frame.

King’s Head A confirmed fourth place with a comfortable 1-5 win over the Pheasant in Newport. Singles wins for Ed Keenan, Bob Perry and Alex Davidson gave the away side three of the first four racks, although Jack Jones kept the tie alive by beating Irene Whittington in frame three. Mick Collins and Trevor Smith sealed the match for the away team in the fifth against Luke Jones and Gaz Davies and Keenan and Davidson added the sixth.

Junction A drew with the Shakespeare in the final match of the night. Hyla Marklew undid Barry Smith to make it 1-0, but stunning wins for Graham Parsons, Mitch Burgess and Kim Rigby over Steve Roycroft, Gordon Sidebotham and Sion Richards put the ‘Shake in reach of the promised land. The Norbury side regrouped, however, and two doubles frame wins sealed the draw.

There were byes for Honeysuckle Hawks and the Royal Navy Club.
