WHEATSHEAF LEAD NEWPORT PLATE WITH TWO WEEKS TO GO

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Marstons Newport & District Pool League headed into its final three weeks with attention now turning to the outcome of the Newport League Plate now that Market Drayton’s Stag have retained the main league title.

The Wheatsheaf began the evening with a two-point lead over a three-way tie for second place between Gnosall’s Horns, the Haberdashers Arms and King’s Head B, with Junction A one point further behind.

The ‘Sheaf scraped a valuable draw against WWFC and that put extra importance on the match between the Horns and the ‘Dashers in Knighton, although both teams could only fight out a 3-3 draw. Wayne Baker and Dai Smith helped the Horns to a valuable point, with the support of David Jolley and Jamie Wright in the doubles.

King’s Head B stayed in the hunt for the title with a resounding 6-0 victory at the Shakespeare and that means they trail the ‘Sheaf by a point with two games to go. The Horns and the Dashers are a point further behind, but the Horns only have one game left.

First met second in the main league and the Sutherland Arms beat the Stag for a second time this season in a thrilling match in Market Drayton. Andy Fishwick upstaged George Allen in a marathon opener to set the visitors on their way, although Mick Manning redressed the balance against Ian Swinnerton. Tom Fisken undid Charlie Hayward to make it 1-2 and Wayne Dodd beat Neil Dale to make it 1-3.

Matt Mansell and Fisken sealed the match against Manning and Dale after benefiting from a fluke to get on a clearance, but Allen and Hayward gave the league winners a second frame in rack six.

It was a night of upsets at the top of the league. The lowly Royal Navy Club earned, perhaps, the biggest upset of the season by humiliating Newport Legion to threaten the home side’s grasp of third place with two games to go. Dan Piper pulled Simon Walley’s trousers down in one fell swoop to make it 0-1, although Colin Farge levelled against Ben Garrott.

Mick Beech made it 2-1 to the home side with a win over veteran Gerry Nunn, but Alan Pritchett set Legion hearts fluttering by getting the better of Chris Eaton to make it 2-2. But it got worse for the home side in the doubles – much worse: Piper and Garrott beat Walley and Farge to earn the away side at least a draw and Nunn and Pritchett rolled back the years to beat Beech and Eaton and earn one of the most famous wins in Newport Pool League history.

Honeysuckle Harriers moved level with the Legion and confirmed fourth place with an impressive 1-5 victory at Junction B. Dean Smith, Russ Woodhouse, Owen Rigby and Greg Quinn played well to beat Dave Blount, Steve Purves and Ryan and James Morris to make it 0-4. Smith and Woodhouse made it five at the expense of Mick Ashforth and Blount, but Purves and James Morris won a consolation for the Norbury side.

Junction A fell to King’s Head A after holding the home side to 2-2 after the singles frames. Hyla Marklew stunned Bobby Perry to put the away side ahead, but wins for Irene Whittington and Ed Keenan over Steve Roycroft and Gordon Sidebotham made it 2-1. Sion Richards levelled at the expense of Trevor Smith, but the King’s prevailed in both doubles frames.

Honeysuckle Hawks won the final match of the night after dropping just one frame to the Pheasant – Jason Shilcock and Ross Richards-Jones blotted their copybook in the doubles frame.
