STAG CLINCH MARSTON’S NEWPORT POOL
LEAGUE TITLE WITH THREE GAMES TO SPARE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag have clinched the Marstons Newport & District Pool League title for the second successive season with three games to spare.
The Drayton side cruised passed the Horns in Gnosall to secure the two points needed to make mathematically make sure that Tibberton’s Sutherland Arms could not catch them. George Allen and the unbeaten Mick Manning set the away side on their way against Jamie Wright and Martyn Holford, but Neil ‘Dynamite’ Dale fell to Dave Jolley. Charlie Hayward sealed at least the draw in the fourth at the expense of Dai Smith and the Stag stormed to the champagne bar in the doubles, although Allen enjoyed his customary diet coke and packet of salt and vinegar crisps to celebrate the league win.
The Suthy maintained second spot with a 5-1 win over the Wheatsheaf. Nigel Sandbrook gave the visitors the whiff of an upset by beating Andy Fishwick, but Ian Swinnerton, Tom Fisken and Wayne Dodd pulled Andy Wakefield’s, Al Harvey’s and Paul Skitt’s trousers down around their ankles and the Suthy added to the ‘Sheaf’s agony in the doubles.
Newport Legion retain third place heading into the final three weeks of the season, although Honeysuckle Harriers closed to within two points after a somewhat fortunate 4-2 win against three-man King’s Head B.
After starting 2-0 down, Luke Carter managed to clear the table to make it 2-1 after Russ Woodhouse had jawed the black for his own seven-ball clearance. When Ryan Langford made a mess of two shots on the black to punish a Neil Perkins in-off, it looked as though the Harriers had sealed the draw, but Perkins potted the black and the white trickled into the middle to make it 2-2. Dean Smith outplayed Adam Barnes to make it 3-2 and Owen Rigby and Smith got away with murder to seal the points in a forgettable match.
King’s Head A retain a slim chance of snatching fourth spot from the Harriers after getting the better of the Shakespeare. Alex Davidson, Irene Whittington and Trevor Smith got the better of Barry Smith, Graham Parsons and Mitch Burgess to make it 3-0 and Ed Keenan sealed the win against Kim Rigby. Bobby Perry and Davidson then lost the fifth frame to Smith and Parsons to give the Shakespeare a consolation frame.
Earlier that evening, the two teams had played out a one-sided semi-final in the Neil Clark Consolation Cup. Keenan, Perry, Whittington and Smith sealed the match in four straight frames and booked a final clash with WWFC at 7pm at the Royal Navy Club on Friday, July 8th.
Honeysuckle Hawks drew with Junction A in Norbury. Ross Richards-Jones got on top of Steve Roycroft to put the visitors in front, but Hyla Marklew and Gordon Sidebotham beat Gary Lewis and Mark Groom to make it 2-1. Up stepped Jason Shilcock to pip Sion Richards to level the match and honours were shared in the doubles, with Roycroft and Sidebotham sealing a deserved point in the final frame.
WWFC got the better of Junction B with the loss of two frames. Craig Williams, Chris Nolan and Chris Watkins made it 3-0 to the home side, but the Norbury side won the fourth through Ryan Morris’s win over Kevin Genner and Dave Blount and Steve Purves set up a grandstand finish by beating Williams and Watkins. Nolan and Genner sealed the points in the final frame by beating Ryan and James Morris.
The Haberdashers Arms dented their chances of winning the Newport League Plate by drawing with the Royal Navy Club.
There were byes for the Pheasant and Newport Legion.
