STAG OVERCOME ROYAL OPPOSITION TO EDGE TOWARDS TITLE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag put a damper on King’s Head A’s quest for third place in the Marston’s Newport & District Pool League and remained firmly on course to defend their title last Wednesday evening.
The Drayton side capitalised on a bye for their Newport Legion rivals to regain a five-point lead in the league. George Allen pulled Bobby Perry’s trousers down to give the home side the opener and wins for Mick Manning, Chris Thompson and Neil Dale over Irene Whittington, Trevor Smith and Mick Collins made it 4-0. Keenan and Alex Davidson managed to squeeze the fifth against Thompson and Dale, but the formidable duo of Allen and Manning prevailed in the sixth.
Sutherland Arms remain third after cruising past the Shakespeare with the loss of one frame. Andy Fishwick, Ian Swinnerton, Wayne Dodd and Tom Fisken won the four singles racks against Barry Smith, Graham Parsons, Mitch Burgess and Kim Rigby, although Jack Hooper and Fishwick conceded the fifth to Smith and Parsons.
A similar 5-1 win for the Honeysuckle Harriers over the Royal Navy Club enabled them to pull clear of King’s Head A again and remain fourth with two games in hand. Dean Smith, Neil Perkins and Russ Woodhouse made it 3-0 with wins over Dan Piper, Emma Fox and Ben Garrott, although a stubborn performance by Allen Pritchett was enough to pip Owen Rigby to make it 3-1. Rigby redeemed himself in the fifth to seal the match alongside Woodhouse and an outrageous Smith double saw off Pritchett and Fox in the sixth.
Honeysuckle Hawks visited Haberdashers Arms and came away with both points after a tense 2-4 win. Ross Richards-Jones, Marcus Thomas and Jason Shilcock were in winning form in the singles frames for the away side.
WWFC entertained the Horns and edged a tight match by the odd frame. Craig Williams beat Wayne Baker to make it 1-0, but Jamie Wright levelled by beating Stuart Robinson. Tom Vernon and Kevin Genner prevailed over Martyn Holford and Kevin Thackwell to make it 3-1 and the duo sealed the match in the fifth against Dai Smith and Baker. Wright and Thackwell won the sixth for the away side.
The Junction A are chasing glory in the Newport Pool League Plate league and took on the Wheatsheaf in Chetwynd Aston, but they were put to the sword by an impressive home side, who dropped just one frame.
Junction B got the better of the Pheasant. Tom Sayce set the away side on their way, but wins for James and Ryan Morris and Mick Ashforth made it 3-1. Dave Blount and Ron Frizzell sealed the win in the fifth and the Morris brothers put the icing on the Junction cake in the sixth.
There were byes for Newport Legion and King’s Head B.
