NEWPORT LEGION CLOSE TO WITHIN THREE AS STAG TAKE A REST
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Newport Legion closed the gap on Market Drayton’s Stag to three points with a 2-4 win over the Haberdashers Arms in the Marston’s Newport & District Pool League. But the defending champions had enjoyed an evening off and now have a game in hand over their rivals.
The Sutherland Arms and Honeysuckle Harriers continue their fascinating tussle for third place. The Tibberton side cruised passed the Royal Navy Club with the loss of one frame and remain fourth on frame difference.
Andy Fishwick, Wayne Dodd Matt Mansell and Ian Swinnerton completed the mission in the singles frames against Dan Piper, Gerry Nunn, Bennington Garrot and Allen Pritchett. Jack Hooper joined Mansell to make it 5-0, but Piper and Garrot bonded well in the final frame to stun Tom Fisken and Dodd to earn a consolation frame.
The Harriers were made to work hard for a 5-1 win over the Pheasant. Russ Woodhouse started the car with a win over Alistair Griffiths, but an Owen Rigby slip up on the black let Gaz Davies in to level. Dean Smith edged a scrappy third frame against Tom Sayce and Greg Quinn cleared well to undo Craig Hutchinson and make it 3-1. Quinn and Rigby sealed the match in the fifth and Smith cleared well alongside Woodhouse in the sixth to make it five.
King’s Head A kept up the pressure with a 2-4 victory at Junction B. Steve Purves got the better of Bobby Perry to make it 1-0, but Mick Collins levelled against Ryan Morris and Irene Whittington made it 1-2 with a win over landlord Mick Ashforth. The match headed into the doubles at 2-2, after James Morris silenced Ed Keenan in frame four, but the away side prevailed in both doubles frames with Simon Drinkwater joining Collins in the final rack.
Gnosall’s Horns extended their Newport Pool League Plate to two points, despite being held to a 3-3 draw at the Shakespeare. Barry Smith undid Dai Smith to set the home side on their way, but Jamie Wright levelled against Graham Parsons. Mitch Rigby got the better of David Jolley to put the home side back in front and the match went to the doubles all-square after Martyn Holford beat Kim Rigby in frame four.
Barry Smith and Parsons set up the prospect of an upset by beating Wright and Holford in the fifth, but Jolley and Charles Minors came to the Horns’s rescue to win frame six and claim the draw.
The Wheatsheaf hosted Honeysuckle Hawks and were beaten by the odd frame. King’s Head B faced Junction A at Chetwynd End and the visitors played superbly well to seal an impressive 1-5 win.
There were byes for Market Drayton’s Stag and WWFC.
King’s Head A booked their place in the semi-finals of the Neil Clark Consolation Shield with a 4-0 victory over the Wheatsheaf. The game was actually played at Chetwynd End instead of the ‘Sheaf’s home venue for some reason. King’s Head A now face the Shakespeare at the Honeysuckle.
