NEWPORT LEGION HEAD STAG BY ONE FRAME IN POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag bounced back from last week’s shock defeat with a comfortable 5-1 win over Wrockwardine Wood Football Club in the Marston’s Newport & District Pool League.

George Allen and Mick Manning made it 2-0 with wins over Craig Williams and Tom Vernon, but Kevin Genner pulled a frame back against Neil Dale to give the Telford side hope. With players missing through work commitments, that chance was short-lived, and stand-in Jo Genner fell to Kyle Smith before the Stag quartet prevailed in the doubles frames.

The win was still not sufficient for the Drayton side to wrest the league lead from the clutches of Newport Legion. Mick Beech’s team put the Horns to the sword in Newport and retain the lead by a single frame after matching the Stag’s 5-1 score line.

Simon Walley, Mick Beech, Jack Dicken and Ant Heathcote won all four singles frames to seal the match, although Martyn Holford and Jamie Wright pulled the fifth frame back against Chris Eaton and Heathcote.

The Sutherland Arms have made the run-in to the title a three-horse race and they stayed on the coat tails of the leading duo with a 2-4 win at the Haberdashers Arms in Knighton.

Honeysuckle Harriers remain fourth after a struggle at the Wheatsheaf without a sick Russ Woodhouse. Tom Tonna somehow managed to squeeze through against Al Harvey to make it 0-1 and Andy Wakefield had just one shot after being on the wrong end of an eight-ball clearance by Greg Quinn that made it 0-2. Nigel Sandbrook pulled a farcical frame back against Neil Perkins, after the hapless Harriers player had used the yellow as the cue ball instead of the white and then recovered, only to nudge Sandbrook’s black into the pocket with two shots available.

Owen Rigby edged a tight rack against Paul Skitt to make it 1-3 and Quinn and Rigby sealed the match in the fifth against Mark Hodgkinson and Harvey, before Wakefield replaced Skitt to edge the final frame with a good finish.

King’s Head A benefitted from a bye for Honeysuckle Harriers and a defeat for WWFC to climb from seventh to fifth after pipping the Pheasant at Chetwynd End. Mick Collins and Irene Whittington lost their frames to Craig Hutchinson and Tom Sayce, but Ed Keenan and Alex Davidson made sure the match was finely poised at 2-2 with wins over Gaz Davies and Alistair Griffiths. The home team prevailed in the doubles racks to seal the points.

Junction A got the better of the Shakespeare with the loss of one frame. Hyla Marklew, Sion Richards, Steve Roycroft and Gordon Sidebotham made it 0-4 with wins over Barry Smith, Graham Parsons, Mitch Burgess and Kim Rigby, although the home team won the final frame as a consolation.

There was a bye for the Royal Navy Club and the match between Junction B and Kings Head B was postponed. As a replacement date could not be arranged between the two league sides in the allotted time frame, Junction B were awarded the win and King’s Head B incurred an unfortunate two-point deduction.

With one week to go before the halfway point in the league, five teams are on the bubble of missing out on Newport League Plate qualification for the bottom eight teams. As it stands, Gnosall’s Horns would miss out and Haberdashers Arms, Junction A and B and the Wheatsheaf would qualify. But that could all change next week.
