HORNS WHITEWASHED AS STAG PULL CLEAR IN POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag took full advantage of their game in hand in the Marston’s Newport & District Pool League to edge into a two-point lead after the 14th week of matches.
They whitewashed the Horns in what promises to be a dress rehearsal for their forthcoming meeting in the quarterfinals of the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy. George Allen, Kyle Smith, Mick Manning and Neil Dale did the damage in the singles racks and there was no way back for the Gnosall side in the doubles frames.
Newport Legion retain second place after having a night off, but unbeaten Sutherland Arms reduced the Legion’s hold on second to just one point after putting the Wheatsheaf to the sword at Chetwynd Aston.
Tom Fisken put the visitors into the lead against Al Harvey, only for Andy Wakefield to level with a win over Ian Swinnerton. That’s as good as it got for the home side, however, and wins for Matt Mansell and Andy Fishwick over Mark Hodgkinson and Nigel Sandbrook made it 1-3. Wayne Dodd and Jack Hooper dished out further punishment for the ‘Sheaf in two tight doubles frames.
The Wheatsheaf remain in eighth and look set to miss out on the Newport League Plate competition when a secondary league, running in unison with the main league for the bottom eight teams, starts in four weeks’ time.
Honeysuckle Harriers retain fourth, but were made to work hard against King’s Head B for a 2-4 win. Russ Woodhouse was fortunate to get the better of Luke Carter in the opener to make it 0-1, but Tom Tonna and Neil Perkins made it 0-3 with wins over Ryan Langford and Lorna Phee. Home skipper Ian Perry won a nail biting safety battle with Owen Rigby to give the home team a lifeline in the fourth.
Greg Quinn teamed up with Woodhouse in the fifth and cleared well to secure the match for the Harriers against Ian and Chris Perry, but Langford capitalised on Perkins jawing his and Tonna’s last ball to take out a useful six-ball clearance alongside Adam Barnes to make it 2-4.
Fifth-placed WWFC visited Junction B and came away with two valuable points. The Telford side stormed into a 0-3 lead, courtesy of wins for Craig Williams, Kevin Genner and Chris Nolan over Ryan and James Morris and Steve Purves. But Stu Till undid Tom Vernon to make it 1-3 heading into the doubles frames. Mick Ashforth and Dave Blount couldn’t turn the home side’s fortunes around though and WWFC secured both racks to make it 1-5.
Honeysuckle Hawks continued their useful run of form to beat Junction A with the loss of two frames. Mark Groom, Jason Shilcock and a useful eight-ball clearance by Marcus Thomas gave the Hawks three of the singles racks and Thomas and Groom prevailed in their doubles frame to secure the win in a tense match against Hyla Marklew’s stubborn outfit.
King’s Head A returned to winning ways with a comfortable 1-5 victory at the Shakespeare, with Mick Collins the only away player to blot his copybook in an otherwise straightforward win for Ed Keenan, Irene Whittington and Bobby Perry.
Haberdashers Arms claimed a walkover win over the Royal Navy Club in the final match of the night after transportation issues prevented the Newport side from fulfilling the fixture. There were byes for Newport Legion and the Pheasant.
The draws were also made for the second rounds of the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy and Neil Clark Consolation Shield. All matches must be played by April 2nd.
