SKIPPER ERROR FAILS TO STOP NRBL
GOING JOINT TOP IN POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL benefited from a night when Market Drayton’s Stag had a bye to move to the summit of the Marston’s Newport & District Pool League.
However, the Newport side remain second on frame difference after undoing Junction A with the loss of one frame, although the Stag have a game in hand.
It was all going swimmingly well for the home team until skipper Mick Beech lost the plot for a few seconds in the final doubles rack with the score at 5-0. With the points safely in the bag, Ant Heathcote forced the Junction into giving away two shots and he suggested that Beech took a yellow to enable him to develop his red. The hapless Beech then forgot he was on reds, potted another yellow, gave the Junction two shots and they cleared to win the consolation frame.
The Sutherland Arms remain in third position after beating King’s Head B at Chetwynd End. But it was another close call for the Tibberton side and for the second week running it was 2-2 after the singles frames, courtesy of useful wins for Ian Perry and Ryan Langford. The Sutherland Arms held their nerve on this occasion to win the doubles frames and seal the points.
Honeysuckle Harriers remain unbeaten on their glass-like cloth after getting the better of Wrockwardine Wood Football Club (WWFC) in a tight match. Tom Tonna overcame Craig Williams in the opener to make it 1-0, Neil Perkins made it two against Tom Vernon and Owen Rigby had a chance on the black to snatch the third from an out-of-sorts Neil Pugh, but an in-off set Pugh on his way to a simple black and 2-1. Russ Woodhouse shaded a scrappy fourth against Chris Nolan to make it 3-1.
Pugh and Williams teamed up to pip Greg Quinn and Woodhouse in a black ball thriller in the fifth to make it 3-2. Quinn had cleverly left the black over the pocket and Pugh with a near impossible red, but the Shropshire county player produced a stunning double up the table to pot the ball tap in the black and snatch the frame. Perkins and Tonna overcame Vernon and Nolan to seal the match after Vernon went out of position on a red and left Tonna a simple black to win.
Honeysuckle Hawks coasted to a 6-0 win at the Shakespeare with Mark Groom, Ross Richards-Jones, Jason Shilcock, Marcus Thomas and Andy Bowsher all getting in on the act. The win moves the Hawks up to sixth.
In-form Wheatsheaf remain in the top half of the table after pipping the Royal Navy Club in a tense 4-2 match at Chetwynd Aston. The win puts them in a clear eighth in the league, but the night deteriorated after that for the home team.
Both parties decided to also play their opening round match in the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy and the pendulum swung in favour of the away side, with the Royal Navy Club reaching the second round of the cup after a thrilling tiebreak win. “I guess it was too much to ask that late. Our guys had peaked too early,” joked ‘Sheaf skipper Mark Hodgkinson.
Haberdashers Arms were granted a walkover victory over the Pheasant after away captain Craig Hutchinson was let down by two players at the 11th hour. The Pheasant also incurred a two-point deduction and now seem destined to be challenging for the Newport League Plate in the second half of the season.
Honours in the all-Staffordshire clash between Junction B and the Horns went to the away side. Wins for Jamie Wright, Dai Smith, Dave Jolley and Martyn Holford gave the Gnosall outfit a 4-0 lead. Jolley cleared well alongside Holford to make it five, but Wright and Smith lost out in rack six.
There were byes for the Stag and King’s Head A.
