STAG AND NRBL A STAY OUT FRONT AS SUTHY ROAST WWFC

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag were quickly into their New Year stride in the Marston’s Newport & District Pool League and remain on top after strolling passed Junction A.

George Allen, Mick Manning, Kyle Smith and Neil Dale did the damage for the home side in the singles frames against Hyla Marklew, Sion Richards, Gordon Sidebotham and Steve Roycroft, although Richards and Roycroft got the better of Allen and Smith in frame five to give the canal-siders a frame.

NRBL A have upped the ante in their bid to wrest the league title from the Stag’s clutches and the signing of Ant Heathcote is sure to bolster their cause over the coming weeks.

Simon Walley disposed of Ross Richards-Jones to give the home team a good start and Jack Dicken made it 2-0 when Jason Shilcock failed to capitalise on receiving two shots. Mark Groom pulled a frame back for the ‘Suckle when Heathcote jawed the black and Groom was gifted a simple clearance to make it 2-1.

Mick Beech delivered a captain’s performance against Gary Lewis to make it 3-1 and he teamed up with Dicken in frame five to seal the match against Richards-Jones and Shilcock, before Groom and Lewis restored some of the Hawks’s pride with a final frame win over Walley and Heathcote.

The tie of the week featured a fascinating tussle between WWFC and Sutherland Arms. Both teams were tied for third before the match on 14 points apiece. Wayne Dodd gave the visitors a perfect start with a win over Craig Williams, but Tom Vernon hit back to level against Ian Swinnerton. The pendulum swung in the Tibberton side’s favour from then on, however, and wins for Tom Fisken and Matt Mansell over Dan Owen and Chris Nolan made it 1-3.

The first appearance of the season for county player Neil Pugh couldn’t stop the rot for the Telford side and Dodd and Fisken sealed the match in the fifth rack and Jack Hooper joined Swinnerton in the final frame to oust Williams and Vernon to make it 1-5.

Honeysuckle Harriers entertained the Horns and definitely had the run of the balls in a rapid-fire 5-1 win. Tom Tonna held his nerve to fend off T. Rigga to make it 1-0 and a useful Neil Perkins clearance against Martyn Holford made it two.

Jamie Wright broke off in the third and cleared the table to make it 2-1, leaving Dean Smith sitting in his chair without a shot. An outrageous fluke on the black handed Russ Woodhouse the frame win over Scott Smith to make it 3-1 and he did the same thing in the same pocket in the doubles alongside Dean Smith to seal the match. Perkins, partnered by Tonna, cleared the table after a scrappy start to the final frame to make it 5-1.

The Wheatsheaf became embroiled in a close tussle with the Pheasant in Chetwynd Aston and emerged victorious by an impressive 5-1 score line. “It’s becoming a bit like nosebleed time at these dizzy heights,” joked ‘Sheaf skipper Mark Hodgkinson, as his team climbed to eighth in the league.

King’s Head B got the better of the Royal Navy Club in Chetwynd End and Shakespeare were awarded a 6-0 walkover victory over NRBL B in the final match of the night, with the away team deducted two points for missing the fixture.

The result of King’s Head A’s trip to the Haberdashers in Knighton was not available as we closed for press and Junction B had a bye.
