SHAKESPEARE A CLAIM NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE PLATE TITLE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Shakespeare A clinched the Newport Pool League Late title with a nail-biting 1-5 victory at the Wheatsheaf. After finishing second to Junction A last year, the Newport side ground out the win with five of the six frames going to the black.
Andy Wakefield had been knocked out of a local singles tournament by Russ Woodhouse the previous evening and he looked set to exact league revenge when he potted the black, only to see the white roll into the pocket to give the away side the lead. Al Harvey levelled in a tense encounter with Tom Vernon and Neil Perkins won a safety marathon against Paul Skitt to make it 1-2. Gary Lewis earned the vital point with a win over Nigel Sandbrook and Dean Smith joined the away side’s assault on both doubles frames.
Haberdashers Arms needed to beat Newport Legion and get at least a draw against LSC at the Tav in the final match of the season, but they ran out losing 4-2 to the league’s third-placed side. John Stanley got the better of James Cooper to give the Knighton team a fighting chance, but Colin Farge, Mick Beech and Simon Walley rallied to beat Mike Caswell, Paul Degg and Trevor Milburn to make it 3-1. Stanley and Degg took the match to a final frame in the first doubles frame, but Beech and Walley prevailed in rack six to confirm third place in the league.
League champions, Market Drayton’s Stag, put the Railway Tavern to the sword in a delayed match and runners-up, LSC at the Tav, prevailed by a similar 5-1 score line against the Royal Navy Club.
The shock of the night came at the Pheasant, where the ever-improving Junction A came away with a shock 1-5 win. Pheasant B claimed a useful 3-3 draw at King’s Head A. Mike Jones got the better of Alex Davidson to make it 0-1, but Mick Collins ousted Jack Jones to level. Craig Hutchinson and Luke Jones made it 1-3 with wins over Irene Whittington and Trevor Smith, but the home team prevailed in both doubles racks to snatch a point.
Honeysuckle came out on top in a thriller with the Horns in Gnosall. Ross Richards Jones put the visitors into a 0-1 lead against Wayne Baker, only for Jamie Wright to level with Andy Bowsher on the receiving end. Jason Shilcock again gave the ‘Suckle the lead with a win over Josh Logan, but Dave Jolley silenced Marcus Thomas to send the match into the doubles at 2-2. The ‘Suckle prevailed in both racks to confirm both points.
The Navigation dropped just one frame in a 1-5 victory at Shakespeare B and they were also awarded a 3-3 draw under the force majeure ruling for the abandoned match at Newport Legion, where Tony Garvey had been taken ill. Garvey is now on the long road to recovery in hospital.
King’s Head B thrashed Junction B, 1-5, in the final match of the evening in Norbury.
The Neil Clark Memorial Trophy and Plate finals and the league prize giving will take place at the Royal Navy Club from 7pm on Wednesday, July 8th. Shakespeare A will play Pheasant B in the first final from 7.15pm and Market Drayton’s Stag take on LSC at the Tav from 9pm onwards.
Everyone is welcome. Admittance is £1 per person and that will go towards food served by the host venue on the night.
