STAG ON VERGE OF SECOND SUCCESSIVE NEWPORT POOL TITLE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Stag moved to within three points of a second successive Newport Pool League title with a comfortable 1-5 win over the Royal Navy Club.

Rivals LSC at the Tav kept up the pressure with a 3-3 draw at Junction B, but they are now relying on their Market Drayton rivals heavily losing two of their remaining four games and drawing one of the others.

Newport Legion remain on course for third after working hard to undo King’s Head B at Chetwynd End. Mick Beech, Jack Dicken, James Cooper and Simon Walley put the home team into a 4-0 lead over Maggie O’Brien, Ian Perry, Lyn Day and Chris Perry and, even though Bobby Perry managed to snatch rack five for the home team, it was over bar the shouting.

Should the Legion slip up, King’s Head A are ready to pounce after cruising to a 1-5 win at the Railway Tavern. Trevor Smith and Alex Davidson got the better of Stu Morrey and Jason Lloyd to make it 0-2, before Greg Quinn pulled the third frame back with success over Irene Whittington. Ed Keenan beat Adam Stone to make it 1-3 and both doubles racks fell to the away side.

Shakespeare A needed to beat Junction A to remain on course for the Newport Plate title and they stormed into a 3-0 lead in three very close safety frames. Russ Woodhouse, Gary Lewis and Neil Perkins managed to find a way through against Sion Richards, Hyla Marklew and Steve Roycroft, before an inspired Gordon Sidebotham produced some sensational safety play to oust Tom Vernon. Lewis and Woodhouse sealed the match in frame five, but Marklew capitalised on a Vernon foul in the final frame to make it 4-2.

Plate rivals Haberdashers Arms entertained the Wheatsheaf and honours were shared.

Horns prevailed against the Navigation in the all-Gnosall clash. Dai Smith put the home side into a 1-0 lead over Jamie Whibley and Martyn Holford doubled the advantage with a win over Bethan Kinnersley. Andy Cross pipped Dave Jolley to pull a frame back, only for Jamie Wright to make it 3-1 against Neil Holford. The Horns won both doubles frames to seal the points.

Pheasant B bounced back from last week’s disappointment to dismiss Shakespeare B without losing a frame. Jack Jones, Tom Sayce, Mike Jones and Scott Smith sealed the match in the singles racks with wins over Barry Smith, Callum Day, Jess Rigby and Mitch Burgess and the quartet prevailed in the doubles to seal the rout.

Pheasant A got the better of the Honeysuckle by the odd frame in the final match of the night.
