SHAKESPEARE B AND ROYAL NAVY CLUB SEAL STUNNING DRAWS
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The headlines in week 28 of the Newport Pool League belonged to lowly Shakespeare B and the Royal Navy Club. The two teams sealed shock 3-3 draws against third-placed Newport Legion and fifth-placed Pheasant A, with Legion skipper Mick Beech left shell shocked by a salvo of pots by Shakespeare’s Barry Smith in a match that left customary Legion trumpeter Simon Walley in disbelief.
The shock results continued during the night and second-placed LSC at the Tav were held to a 3-3 draw by a quality Pheasant B comeback, in a result that all but hands Market Drayton’s Stag the league title.
Greg Heathcote, Andy Miles and Ant Heathcote had put LSC into a 1-3 lead after Scott Smith had disposed of Andy Lewis to pull a frame back for the home team. But Mike and Luke Jones played well to make it 2-3 in the first doubles rack and a stunning Jack Jones clearance in the final frame gave the home team an unlikely draw.
The Stag cruise mercilessly towards a second successive Newport Pool League title and King’s Head B were the latest team to suffer at the hands of the Market Drayton cues. Kyle Smith let the side down and ruined the whitewash on the night when the league’s top player George Allen celebrated his birthday with a traditional diet cola.
King’s Head A remain fourth after pipping a plucky Haberdashers in Knighton. The ‘Dashers continue to lead the Newport Plate League by one point after Shakespeare A won a nail-biting contest at the Railway Tavern by the odd frame. Russ Woodhouse put the away team into the lead against Adam Stone and, when Dean Smith missed the black to make an eight-ball clearance on his first visit, Greg Quinn played the patience game to grind out the frame win and level the match.
A Stu Morrey foul edged rack three in Neil Perkins’s favour and Gary Lewis played well to pip Dave Bristow to make it 1-3. Quinn and Morrey beat Woodhouse and Smith to make it 2-3, but Lewis held his nerve in a tense final rack to tap in the black in a frame that could easily have gone to a re-rack.
The Honeysuckle remain sixth after a 3-3 draw with Junction A, although they are only there because of a better frame difference than the Horns. The Gnosall side came back from 0-3 down to grab a draw against Junction B. Frank James, James Morris and Stu Till had done the damage for the Norbury side against Dai Smith, Wayne Baker and Dave Jolley, but Josh Logan snatched frame four and the Horns regrouped to win the doubles frames.
The Navigation were beaten 2-4 by the Wheatsheaf in Gnosall.
Pheasant B made it through to the final of the Neil Clark Memorial Plate Trophy with a 4-2 win over Shakespeare B. They will meet the winners of the match between Shakespeare A and the Navigation at the Royal Navy Club on July 8.
