STAG EDGE AHEAD OF LSC AFTER CRUCIAL LEAGUE VICTORY

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag hosted LSC at the Tav in a potential Newport Pool League decider on Wednesday night. LSC had been top of the league since December 18th last year, but the Drayton side prevailed by the odd frame and head into the final nine matches of the season with a one-point lead and a superior frame difference.

George Allen left Andy Miles with seven balls on the table, as the Stag made it 1-0, and Mick Manning made it two with a win over Andy Lewis. When Ricky Leese jawed a black, Greg Heathcote held his nerve to make it 2-1, only for Neil Dale to ride his luck to make it 3-1 with a win over birthday boy Ant Heathcote. Greg Heathcote fouled off the break in rack five and Leese cleared from the restart to make it 4-1, although Miles and Ant Heathcote pulled a consolation frame back for the dejected Newport side.

The Horns switched their home clash against the Legion to Newport but it back fired badly and singles wins for Jack Dicken, Colin Farge, Mick Beech and Simon Walley over Jamie Wright, Josh Logan, Dave Jolly and Wayne Baker sewed the seeds for a 0-6 ‘away’ rout.

Pheasant A cruised passed Junction B to retain fifth place. Ian Swinnerton, Jack Hooper and Anthony Allen had put the home team into a 3-0 lead over Steve Purves, J. Morris and Mick Ashforth, only for Ryan Morris to throw the away team a lifeline with a win over Andy Fishwick. Tom Fisken sealed the points in the fifth frame and a useful Swinnerton clearance in the sixth confirmed a comfortable win.

Shakespeare A consolidated their lead at the top of the Newport League Plate with a rapid-fire 6-0 win over the Royal Navy Club. Neil Perkins, Russ Woodhouse, Dean Smith and Tom Vernon sealed the points in the singles and the quartet rode their luck a little to win both of the doubles racks.

Honeysuckle and Pheasant B ground out a 3-3 draw. The away side’s Mike Jones edged a tense opener against Ross Richards-Jones, only for Marcus Thomas to seven-ball Luke Jones and level. Scott Smith beat Jason Shilcock to make it 1-2 and Aled Jones redressed the balance against Jack Jones to make it 2-2. The away team edged into a 2-3 lead, but Thomas and Aled Jones prevailed in the final frame to confirm the draw.

The Haberdashers Arms continued their run of good form with a shock 2-4 win at the Railway Tavern to remain level on points with Shakespeare A in the Newport League Plate. Ben Harrison and Paul Degg put the away side into a 0-2 lead over Stu Morrey and Adam Stone, but Greg Quinn and Dave Bristow levelled for the home team. The Knighton side dig deep in the doubles racks to snatch both points.

The Navigation stole the bragging rights in the all-Staffordshire clash with Junction A at Norbury. King’s Head A got the better of their B team in the Battle of Chetwynd End with the loss of one frame, while the Wheatsheaf and Shakespeare B shared the spoils in Chetwynd Aston.

The draw was also made for the semi-finals of the Neil Clark Memorial and Consolation Shields. All four matches must be played by June 12th. The two finals will be held on league prize giving night on Wednesday, July 8th at the Royal Navy Club.
