LSC PROVE TITLE POTENTIAL WITH CRUSHING WIN OVER PHEASANT
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Newport Pool League’s LSC at the Tav faced a crucial test of their title potential at Pheasant A and emerged with an emphatic 1-5 victory from a match that promised so much in terms of pre-event hype and controversy.
The away side stormed into a 0-4 lead, courtesy of wins for Andy Miles, Greg Heathcote, Ben Longstaff and Ant Heathcote over Ant Allen, Andy Fishwick, Ian Swinnerton and Tom Fisken and, when Jack Hooper made a pigs ear of the black in rack five, Ant Heathcote claimed the fifth frame. Fishwick ground out a gruelling sixth rack to seal a consolation after he had handed away a re-rack win in his singles frame.
Market Drayton’s Stag stayed firmly on course to retain their Newport Pool League title with a 4-2 win over the Horns. “Pardon the pun, but it ain’t over yet by a long chalk,” said the Stag’s George Allen.
The Wheatsheaf were no match for Newport Legion in a controversial match at Chetwynd Aston, where the away side used their refereeing opportunity to exploit a controversial ‘talking in the doubles’ ruling to their full advantage to claim the final frame and the two points. A disgruntled ‘Sheaf had the consolation of giving former player Simon Walley a bloody nose when he came up against in-form Al Harvey. “If that’s how serious it’s become, give them a 6-0 win,” said a fuming ‘Sheaf’s Mark Hodgkinson.
King’s Head A remain on course for a top four finish after dismissing Shakespeare B without losing a frame. Ed Keenan, Trevor Smith, Irene Whittington and Mick Collins did the damage for a full-strength home team against Barry Smith, Callum Day and Beth and Kim Rigby in the singles and the doubles frames went the same way.
The Railway Tavern climbed to the dizzy heights of sixth with a 2-4 win over the Navigation, despite Neil Holford giving Greg Quinn a potting lesson with a fine seven-ball clearance. Stu Morrey, Dave Bristow and Adam Stone had out the home side into a 3-0 lead.
Shakespeare A continued their run of good form with a somewhat flattering 5-1 home win over King’s Head B. Russ Woodhouse and Neil Perkins prevailed in two topsy-turvy openers against Bobby Perry and Maggie O’Brien, although Lyn Day got the better of Tom Vernon to make it 1-2. Dean Smith got out of jail to expose Lorna Phee and, when Perry missed the chance to take out seven balls in rack five against Perkins and Vernon, the latter potted the final black to seal the points.
Haberdashers maintained top spot in the Newport Pool League Plate with an impressive 4-2 win over Pheasant B. “It’s not a very pleasant drive back from here in the dark when you’ve had a good beating,” chirped ‘Dashers player Vicky Winter.
Norbury pride went in favour of the B team in the Junction derby by the canal and the Honeysuckle bounced back to form with a comfortable 6-0 win over the Royal Navy Club, with Ross Richards-Jones returning from a long lay-off from illness to win both his singles and doubles frames.
