TEAM SPAT MARS KING’S HEAD AND NEWPORT LEGION STALEMATE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): A spat between two of the top players in the Newport Pool League marred a tense 3-3 draw between King’s Head A and Newport Legion in the 21st round of matches.
With the third-placed away side leading 1-3, Jack Dicken and Darren Pountney disagreed over a clearance option for the Legion side and it unsettled Dicken to the extent that the King’s Head went on to win the frame and also seal an unlikely draw.
LSC at the Tav and Market Drayton’s Stag remain locked in a duel for supremacy at the top. Both teams recorded whitewash away wins over Junction A and the Wheatsheaf and a mere two points separate them with 13 matches to go. Andy Lewis, Ben Longstaff and Greg and Antony Heathcote did the damage for LSC in the singles and there was no way back for the Norbury side.
Pheasant A took full advantage of the Legion’s and King’s Head’s stalemate to close the gap at the top with a hard-earned 4-2 win over the Horns. Wayne Baker put the Gnosall side into a 0-1 lead with a win over Tom Fisken, only for Andy Fishwick, Matt Mansell and Ian Swinnerton to make it 3-1 after getting the better of Jamie Wright, Dave Jolley and Josh Logan. Swinnerton sealed the fifth frame for the home team and Fisken redeemed himself in the final rack to confirm the win with a useful clearance.
The Honeysuckle climbed towards the top six with an emphatic 6-0 home win over King’s Head B. Mark Warren, Aled Jones, Marcus Thomas and Jason Shilcock upstaged Bobby, Chris and Ian Perry and Lorna Phee to make it 4-0 and the home team claimed both doubles frames to confirm the rout.
The Royal Navy Club produced one of the performances of the season to beat Pheasant B and record their first win of the season. “We are still in shock and over the moon,” quipped RNA’s Jez Price.
Shakespeare A edged a tense encounter against their B team. Dean Smith and Neil Perkins made it 2-0 against Barry Smith and Luke Rigby, but a stunning five-ball clearance from Callum Day stopped Tom Vernon in his tracks to make it 1-2. Russ Woodhouse sneaked through against Kim Rigby to make it 3-1 and the A team snatched the win in a tense fifth frame before a hapless Dean Smith totally numptied the black into the corner midway through the final frame.
Shakespeare A also prevailed, 0-4, in a tight Neil Clark Consolation Shield match on Monday night at the Haberdashers Arms. Adam Bailey, Perkins, Vernon and Smith rode their luck at times to dismiss Vicky Winter, Rich Bayliss, Paul Degg and an impressive Ben Harrison in four very different singles frames.
The Railway Tavern dented Junction B’s Newport League Plate hopes with a 4-2 win in Upper Bar and the Haberdashers prevailed by a similar score line against the Navigation and remain top of the Newport Pool League Plate at this early stage.
