LSC BATTLE BACK TO STAY IN CHARGE OF NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): LSC at the Tav showed their title pedigree against a spirited Shakespeare A to stay on course for a maiden Newport Pool League title.
The Tavern-based side came back from 0-2 down to snatch the win in a tense match in Upper Bar. Neil Perkins and Tom Vernon had given the away team chance to smile, but a solid repost by Ant Heathcote made it 1-2 and Andy Lewis overcame the nightmare scenario of losing to Dean Smith to level. The home team went on to win two very tight doubles frames with Lewis sealing the crucial clearance in the final frame.
The Stag overcame a potentially tricky clash against Pheasant A to stay on course to defend their title and dropped only one frame, but remain two points behind LSC with 14 games remaining. The two teams are set to meet in Market Drayton in a few weeks’ time.
Newport Legion maintained their title challenge with a 5-1 home win over Junction A. Simon Walley, Jason Taphouse and Jack Dicken made it 3-0 with wins over Hyla Marklew, Steve Roycroft and Gordon Sidebotham and, even though Sion Richards undid Mick Beech, the home team prevailed in the doubles.
King’s Head A faced a tricky away clash at the Horns one night after both teams had been dumped out of the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy in tie-frame deciders.
Ant Allen had out the Phez into a 1-0 lead at the expense of Alex Davidson and that set the tone for the cup singles, with Irene Whittington levelling against Tom Fisken, Ian Swinnerton beating Ed Keenan to make it 2-1 and Mick Collins equalising against Andy Fishwick. Doubles honours were shared, but Ant Allen returned from taxi duty at the last minute to defeat Collins in a tense tie-breaker.
The Horns also lost out on a tie-break frame when the Navigation’s Neil Holford got the better of David Jolley in their cup tie, after the match had followed a similar topsy-turvy format to the Pheasant encounter. Honours were shared in their league encounter after the King’s Head came back from 0-2 down to seal the draw in the final frame.
Junction B hosted the Honeysuckle in Norbury and the away side prevailed by the odd frame to stay on course for a top seven finish. Pheasant B got the better of the Wheatsheaf by a similar 4-2 score line in a tense match in Upper Bar and the Railway Tavern thrashed neighbours, Shakespeare B, with the loss of one frame.
The results of the matches between King’s Head B and the Haberdashers Arms and the Navigation and the Royal Navy Club were not available as we closed for press.
