NEWPORT LEGION GIVE RAILWAY TAVERN A GOOD OLD DICKEN

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Jack Dicken came back to haunt his former side, as Newport Legion retained third place in the local pool league with a 4-2 home win over Dicken’s former side, the Railway Tavern.

Simon Walley had put the home team into a 1-0 lead against Stu Morrey, before Russ Porter lost the toss in his rack against ‘Judas’ Dicken and the former ‘Tav star broke and cleared the table to make it 2-0.

With the away side reeling from the sucker punch, Mick Beech hammered home a third against Greg Quinn, although Adam Stone reduced the deficit to 3-1 against Colin Farge. After the Tavern had made it 3-2 in the first doubles frame, Beech and Walley beat Stone and Morrey to seal the points.

LSC at the Tavern overcame a potentially tricky encounter against the Honeysuckle to retain their three-point lead at the top, although they very nearly threw away a 3-0 lead when Jason Shilcock gave the away team a lifeline at the expense of Ant Heathcote.

The rack win gave the ‘Suckle confidence and Mark Groom and Shilcock won the fifth against Greg Heathcote and Andy Lewis to force Andy Miles and Ant Heathcote to work hard to claim the deciding frame against Aled Jones and Marcus Thomas.

The Stag took full advantage and put Junction A to the sword in Market Drayton to draw level on frame difference with LSC, although they remain three points behind with 16 games remaining.

The all-Pheasant encounter went in favour of the A side by the odd frame, but the Horns went down to a 2-4 home defeat to Shakespeare A in Gnosall. The result sees the Shakespeare climb back to seventh in the table.

Dai Smith ousted Russ Woodhouse to give the home team a good start, but Tom Vernon cleared well to level against Wayne Baker, Adam Bailey beat Dave Jolley and Dean Smith ousted Josh Logan to make it 1-3. Smith and Baker got the better of Woodhouse and Vernon to send the match into a deciding frame, but Jolley potted the black and white to gift Smith and Bailey the win and both points.

Shakespeare B were beaten at home by Haberdashers, who climb to joint top at the start of the Newport League Plate with Junction B. The Norbury side also won 5-1 against a three-man Royal Navy Club.

King’s Head B made a good start to their Newport Plate campaign with a 4-2 win over the Navigation, but the result of the match between King’s Head A and the Wheatsheaf was not available as we closed for press.
