LSC AT THE TAV HALFWAY TO FIRST EVER NEWPORT POOL TITLE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): LSC at the Tav remain on course for a first ever Newport Pool League title at the halfway point of the season. They remain three points clear of Market Drayton’s Stag after disposing of Knighton’s Haberdashers with the loss of just one frame.
Paul Degg got the better of Andy Lewis to put the visitors into a surprise lead, but Ray Talbot and Greg and Anthony Heathcote hit back with wins over Vicky Winter, Rich Bayliss and Mike Casewell to make it 3-1. The quartet also prevailed in both doubles frames.
The tie of the night was also a dress rehearsal for the qualifying match for the second round of the Neil Clark Memorial trophy between Pheasant A and King’s Head A. Ant Allen edged a tense opener against Trevor Smith to put the home team 1-0 up, only for Ed Keenan to level against Andy Fishwick.
Young Alex Davidson enjoyed a six-ball clearance to stun Ian Swinnerton, but a Mick Collins in-off on the black gifted frame four to Jack Hooper and the match went into the doubles at 2-2. Irene Whittington and Smith beat Swinnerton and Fishwick to make it 2-3, but Tom Fisken dug deep in the last doubles rack to seal the draw.
Newport Legion were forced to work hard for a draw by the Honeysuckle and the vital point for the away side confirmed that they survived the drop into the Newport League Plate.
The Stag crushed a makeshift Shakespeare A, 5-1, and the result means that the away team are the last qualifiers for the Newport League Plate that runs in conjunction with the league for the next 17 weeks. The home team surged into a rapid-fire 3-0 lead before being pegged back by a useful clearance and two long-winded doubles contests.
King’s Head B hosted Pheasant B in a tense match at Chetwynd End and honours were shared. The point also meant that the away team avoided the drop into the Newport League Plate.
Horns got the better of an inconsistent Railway Tavern side in Gnosall by the odd frame and Junction B went down to a 1-5 home defeat to the Navigation. The result of the match between in-form Wheatsheaf and Junction A was not available as we closed for press.
Honours were shared in the bottom of the table clash between Shakespeare B and the Royal Navy Club and the pair remain locked on the same points and identical frame differences at the foot of the league.
The bottom nine teams continue to play in the Newport Pool League, but also qualify for the Newport League Plate that runs for the remaining 17 weeks of the season.
