JUNCTION A UPSET PHEASANT B IN UPPER BAR THRILLER
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Under-achieving Junction A stunned high-flying Pheasant B in their week 14 fixture in the Newport Pool League.
Hyla Marklew, Sion Richards and Steve Roycroft put the away side into a stunning 0-3 lead with wins over Luke and Mike Jones and Craig Hutchinson, but Liam Matthews steadied the home ship with a win over Gordon Sidebottom. Mike Jones and Matthews set up the prospect of a thrilling decider only for Roycroft and Sidebottom to prevail in the final frame and seal a useful win.
The leading trio continued their winning form, with LSC at the Tav remaining a point in front of the Stag after a 2-4 win at King’s Head B. Greg and Anthony Heathcote made it 0-2 with wins over Bob and Chris Perry and Andy Miles made it 0-3 on his birthday celebration against Maggie O’Brien. Lorna Phee silenced Andy Lewis to make it 1-3, but Ray Talbot and Ben Longstaff sealed the win for the away side. Ian and Bobby Perry then pulled a consolation rack back for the home team against Greg Heathcote and a hapless Lewis.
The Stag sealed a 1-5 win at the Haberdashers in Knighton – with Neil Dale playing a starring role for the away team – and Newport Legion stayed on the leading duo’s coat-tails with a hard-earned 1-5 win at the Navigation.
Fourth-placed King’s Head A travelled to Shakespeare A and honours were shared in an error-strewn fiasco. Trevor Smith accidentally potted the black in a tense opener to gift Russ Woodhouse the advantage and Dean Smith got out of jail to pip Alex Davidson to make it 2-0.
Missed pots were a factor in rack three and Mick Collins benefited from a Tom Vernon calamity to make it 2-1. Both Irene Whittington and Kevin Genner missed pots to win frame four and a Genner howler set up Whittington to level the match. Honours were shared in the doubles and the match was drawn.
The Horns came away from the Royal Navy Club with both points after a tense 2-4 win, while eighth played fifth in a tense encounter between the Railway Tavern and Pheasant A in Upper Bar and the match ended in a stalemate. Honeysuckle drew with the Wheatsheaf and Junction B earned two valuable points at the expense of Shakespeare B.
