STAG EDGE TENSE BATTLE AGAINST LEGION TO STAY TOP

NEWPORT (Shropshire): First entertained third in a fascinating table-top clash between Market Drayton’s Stag and Newport Legion in the Newport Pool League and the home side scraped through to seal the win and stay clear at the top of the league.

George Allen got the better of Simon Walley in rack one, but Jack Dicken levelled for the visitors against Kyle Smith. Mick Manning set the home team on their way again with a win over Mick Beech and Neil Dale pipped Colin Farge to make it 3-1. Manning and Smith sealed the points in frame five, but Dicken and Walley ensured the Legion went down fighting in the final rack.

Pheasant B travelled to a Horns side in Gnosall that was missing Wayne Baker, Dai Smith and Martyn Holford, but wins for Josh Logan and Neil Holmes in the singles and two doubles frame successes gave the home side an impressive win.

Shakespeare A kept up a four-match unbeaten run with a 5-1 triumph against the Navigation. Dean Smith, Russ Woodhouse and Andy Phelan put the home side into a 3-0 lead, but Alan Crossley won a black ball fourth rack to give the away side a lifeline. The home team won both the doubles frames to edge a tight match.

The Honeysuckle played the Haberdashers Arms in a mid-table clash and won by the odd frame after being 0-2 down to frame wins for Paul Degg and Vicky Winter over Marcus Thomas and Ross Richards-Jones. Jason Shilcock and Mark Groom levelled against Rich Bayliss and Mike Casewell and the home quartet won the doubles frames to confirm the win.

The Railway Tavern climbed to a heady sixth with a 5-1 win over three-man Royal Navy Club. Mark Kijuk stunned Jason Lloyd to put the away side ahead, but Billy Holland and Dave Bristow won their singles racks to push the Tavern towards two points.

LSC at the Tav were made to work hard for both points against a lively Wheatsheaf side and only lost one frame on their way to reclaiming second place in the league. Greg Heathcote, Ben Longstaff, Andy Miles and Ant Heathcote did the damage in the singles, but the ‘Sheaf claimed a consolation doubles frame.

Junction A entertained high-flying King’s Head B in Norbury and won the match by the odd frame.

Pheasant A got back into winning ways with a fortunate 4-2 win over bottom side Shakespeare B. Barry Smith and Callum Day stunned Matt Mansell and Jack Hooper to make it 2-0, but wins for Ian Swinnerton and Andy Fishwick were followed up by two doubles wins for the home side.

King’s Head A also climbed to ninth in the table with a 4-2 home win over Junction B. Steve Purves got the better of Alex Davidson to make it 0-1, but Ed Keenan levelled against Stu Till. The consistent Mick Ashforth got one over Irene Whittington to put the away side in front again but a win for Trevor Smith over Ryan Morris was followed by two doubles wins for the home side with landlord Mick Collins joining the fray in rack five.
