SHAKESPEARE A WIN LOCAL DERBY TO MOVE OFF THE MARK
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Shakespeare A got the better of the derby match with their B team to notch a first win of the season in the Newport Pool League after losing three tight early season matches against top four opposition.
Dean Smith kept up his 100% singles start to the season with a win over Barry Smith and victories for Tom Vernon and Andy Phelan over Callum Day and Jess Rigby made it 3-0. Kim Rigby pulled a rack back against Russ Woodhouse before the A team prevailed in both singles frames.
LSC at the Tav and Market Drayton’s Stag remain at the top of the table after the first month of action on the green baize. LSC got the better of Junction A, 6-0, in Upper Bar and the Stag thrashed the Wheatsheaf 5-1.
Singles wins for Andy Miles, Andy Lewis, Ben Longstaff and Greg Heathcote were supported by Ray Talbot in the doubles and LSC edged a further frame clear of their Drayton rivals.
Horns faced a tricky home clash against Pheasant A in Gnosall and they lost their unbeaten record by the odd frame, despite Martyn Holford winning his singles rack and Dai Smith and Holford securing the last frame.
Newport Legion won a surprisingly one-sided contest against an out-of-sorts King’s Head A. Simon Walley put the home team into a 1-0 lead with a win over Graham Tigwell, only for Phil Emery to level against Jason Taphouse. It was one-way traffic from then on and Jack Dicken and Mick Beech got the better of Irene Whittington and Trevor Smith to make it 3-1 and there was no respite in the doubles frames either.
Pheasant B overcame bottom side, the Royal Navy Club, with the loss of one frame and the Haberdashers Arms claimed the bragging rights in the all-Staffordshire clash with the Navigation in Gnosall.
Junction B hosted the Railway Tavern in Norbury, but it was the resurgent away side that edged a tight contest. Jason Lloyd, Greg Quinn, Adam Stone and Stu Morrey put the visitors into a 0-4 lead, only for the Junction to win the final two frames.
King’s Head B continue to improve and the Honeysuckle were on the wrong end of a 4-2 result at Chetwynd End. “We are putting our A team to shame at the moment,” joked King’s Head B’s Ian Perry. “There’s a lot of daylight between us at the moment!”
