RUNNERS-UP LSC AT THE TAV WIN NEW DENNIS HOLLAND SHIELD

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Recently-crowned Newport Pool League champions, Market Drayton’s Stag, continued to press on regardless with a 5-1 win over Shakespeare A.

LSC at the Tav confirmed second place in the league and will be awarded the new Dennis Holland Memorial Shield after beating the Navigation, 4-2. Greg Heathcote and John Williams made it 2-0, but Neil Holford and Scott Smith levelled with wins over Lak Badhan and Ant Heathcote before the home side regrouped to take the doubles frames.

Pheasant A are guaranteed third place after dismissing King’s Head B with the loss of just one frame. That rack fell to Lyn Day with a good win over Colin Smith, but the Pheasant followed up with frame successes for Matt Mansell, Ian Swinnerton and Ant Allen to make it 3-1 and the home side also won the doubles.

Newport Legion will finish their league campaign in fourth place following their 1-5 win over Shakespeare B. Andy Miles, Colin Farge and Mick Beech made it 0-3, but Kim Rigby played well to make it 1-3, before the visitors secured both doubles frames.

The outcome of the Newport Plate Trophy will go to the final week of the season. Junction A need a win in their final match against the Wheatsheaf to guarantee the trophy and Shakespeare must beat the Horns and hope that the ‘Sheaf can claim a draw in Norbury. The outcome will then be settled on frame difference. King’s Head A entertained Junction A and won the match 4-2.

The Horns shared the spoils with the Royal Navy Veterans in Gnosall. Dai Smith got the home side off to a winning start on the black against Mark Kijuk but Dean Smith levelled with a win over Wayne Baker. Martyn Holford made it 2-1 by edging his frame against Gerry Nunn and Alan Pritchett hit back to beat Any White. Both doubles frames were shared.

Junction B hosted Pheasant B in a mid-table clash, with the away side taking both points by the odd frame.

The Railway Tavern visited the Wheatsheaf in the final match of the evening and the Royal Navy Seals were booked to play against Haberdashers Arms in Bellman’s Yard, but ceded the game to the visitors.
