MARKET DRAYTON’S STAG CLINCH NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE TITLE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag clinched their first Newport Pool League title with two games remaining after crushing the Royal Navy Veterans, 1-5, at Bellman’s Yard.

The dominant force for much of the season and deserved winners of the title for their sporting prowess and patient, often even tedious, play it was fitting that they secured the two points that were needed against last year’s title-winning skipper Dean Smith, who guided them to the title at the Horns in Gnosall.

Smith, however, had the last laugh after beating George Allen when the latter potted the white and the black. Kyle Smith, Mick Manning and Neil Dale did the damage for the Stag, who also won both doubles frames.

LSC at the Tav look all but certain to clinch the new Dennis Holland Shield for second place, despite being held to a 3-3 draw by Pheasant B. Singles wins for Greg and Ant Heathcote over Luke Jones and Tom Sayce cancelled out wins for Mike Jones and Simon Walley over Andy Lewis and Paul Cartledge and the doubles racks were shared.

Third-placed Pheasant A dented Junction A’s hopes of winning the Newport League Plate Trophy, but a 3-3 draw did neither side any real favours.

Newport Legion claimed both points against the Royal Navy Seals to remain in a solid fourth place after the visitors cancelled the match. The Railway Tavern entertained King’s Head A in Upper Bar and scraped a draw after going 1-3 down to the fifth-placed side.

Shakespeare A needed both points in their home match against the Wheatsheaf to remain in contention for the Newport Plate, but honours were shared. Junction B ruined their chance of retaining the Newport League Plate after being beaten, 4-2, by lowly King’s Head B.

The Haberdashers Arms in Knighton stunned the Horns with a crushing 5-1 win. Vicky Winter was the star of the show for the home side and featured well in both the winning singles and doubles frames.

The result of the match between the Navigation and Shakespeare B was not available as we closed for press.
