STAG MAINTAIN COMPOSURE AND STAY ON TRACK IN POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag edged ever closer to the Newport Pool League title with a hard-earned 1-5 win over sixth-placed Pheasant B. Nearest rivals LSC at the Tav enjoyed a comfortable 0-6 win over the Royal Navy Seals to remain four points adrift with six games to go and 12 points still at stake.

Pheasant A stay on course to stave off the Newport Legion’s challenge for third place after fending off the Haberdashers Arms in Knighton for a 3-3 draw.

Rivals Newport Legion faced a tricky clash against fifth-placed King’s Head A and managed to share the spoils and remain two points behind their rivals, despite attending the match with three players instead of four.

Andy Miles and Mick Beech put the Legion into a 2-0 lead over Mick Collins and Irene Whittington and Wayne Dodd got the better of Dan Owen to make it 3-0. The visitors claimed the fourth rack in the absence of a working Darren Pountney and the King’s Head claimed both doubles frames to seal the draw.

Shakespeare A remain top of the Newport Plate League, despite slumping to a shocking 1-5 home defeat to the Railway Tavern.

Club-goer Jason Lloyd outdid Andy Wakefield to make it 0-1 and Greg Quinn won a marathon re-racked second frame against Jason Taphouse to make it 0-2. Neil Perkins pulled a tense third frame back against Adam Stone to make it 1-2, only for Stu Morrey to make it 1-3 with a win over Ross-Richards-Jones.

Careless unforced errors cost the Shakespeare dearly in the doubles and Don Morrey rolled back the years in the final frame to seal the bragging rights alongside ecstatic son Stu. “Big Don sipped his cider, steadied the ship and then it was all over bar the shouting,” gloated young Morrey.

Junction B entertained the Horns in Norbury and went down to a 1-5 defeat. Welsh wizard Dai Smith, Jim Hayward, Wayne Baker and Martyn Halford gave the away team the points in the singles racks, but Mick Ashworth and Steve Purvis won frame five to stop the rout.

The Navigation shared the spoils with the Wheatsheaf and Junction A overcame the Royal Navy Veterans to move above their rivals in the Newport Plate League. The bottom two teams met in the match between King’s Head B and Shakespeare B and honours were shared.
