STAG TAKE CONTROL IN POOL LEAGUE AS LSC SLIP UP AT HORNS

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag remain on track for the Newport Pool League title after getting the better of Junction B with the loss of one frame on a night when rivals, LSC at the Tav, were held to a 3-3 draw by the Horns in Gnosall.

The Drayton side now take a four-point lead and a superior frame difference into the remaining seven matches of the season. LSC slipped behind in the first rack in Gnosall, when Greg Heathcote was undone by the Welsh wizard Dai Smith, but Andy Lewis redressed the balance to level against Wayne Baker.

Jim Haywood continued the Horns’s momentum by getting the better of John Williams, only for Ant Heathcote to beat Martyn Holford and make it 2-2. Greg Heathcote and Williams set the visitors en route to victory by claiming the fifth frame, but Holford and Smith were not to be denied and levelled in the final rack.

Third met fourth in the clash that could well decide third place in the league. Home side Pheasant A went into the match against Newport Legion with a two-point lead and an inferior frame difference. The result was not available as we closed for press.

Shakespeare A lead the Newport Plate League by a point and a vastly superior frame difference after earning their fourth 6-0 win in six weeks. Andy Phelan, Neil Perkins, Ross Richards-Jones and Jason Taphouse sealed four very different frames against the luckless Lucy Hennessey, Chris Perry, Maggie O’Brien and Lyn Day and, even though Andy Wakefield and Ian Perry joined the fray for opposing sides in the doubles, the Shake managed to squeeze another two wins to confirm the rout.

King’s Head A remain a comfortable fifth after a 3-3 draw with the Navigation and the Railway Tavern got the better of the Royal Navy Veterans in Upper Bar by the odd frame. After Adam Stone had put the Tavern in front against Mark Kijuk, Dean Smith’s 10th successive singles’ win was enough to beat Dave Bristow to level the score.

Stu Morrey put the home team in front for the second time against Gerry Nunn, but cool customer Alan Pritchett undid Jason Lloyd to make it 2-2. Morrey and Bristow made it 3-2 to the home side and then Smith and Pritchett numptied the final frame against Greg Quinn and Stone and the home team sealed both points.

Pheasant B were held to a 3-3 draw by the Wheatsheaf in Chetwynd Aston and Junction A earned a similar score line against the Haberdashers Arms. Shakespeare B were handed a 0-6 victory over the absent Royal Navy Seals in the final match of the night.
