PHEASANT A THROW TITLE RACE WIDE OPEN WITH WIN OVER LSC

NEWPORT (Shropshire): First played third in a crunch tie at the top of the Newport Pool League and the Pheasant A threw the title race wide open with a 4-2 victory over former league-leading LSC at the Tav.

Andy Lewis put the visitors in front with a win over Matt Mansell, but Ian Swinnerton benefited from a useful break to level the match against Greg Heathcote. Trevor Smith snatched a crucial third frame from Paul Trevor to make it 2-1 and a stunning Ant Allen eight-ball clearance left Anthony Heathcote in awe and the score at 3-1.

By now the match had developed into an ill-tempered contest and a sour atmosphere marred the doubles frames. Lewis and Greg Heathcote were comfortable winners over Mansell and Smith to make it 3-2, but Swinnerton held his nerve in rack six, alongside Allen, to beat Trevor and Ant Heathcote and seal the win.

Market Drayton’s Stag took full advantage to claim their 19th win from 23 starts against Gnosall’s Horns and move to the top of the league. Wayne Baker put the visitors into a 0-1 lead after George Allen potted the white and the black, but Ricky Leese equalised against Dai Smith. Mick Manning and Neil Dale made it 3-1 to the home side and honours were shared in the doubles.

King’s Head A maintained a distant fourth place with a rampant 6-0 win over Shakespeare B. Mick Collins made it 1-0 against Russ Woodhouse but Ed Keenan was fortunate to make it two after young Jess Hilditch went in off the black. Irene Whittington edged her frame against Barry Smith to make it 3-0 and Dan Owen came out on top of a tense fourth rack against Kim Rigby to seal the points. Young Conor Keenan joined the King’s Head rout in the last frame and potted three yellows and the black to complete the whitewash.

Newport Legion remain in fifth after a tense 2-4 victory over the improving Royal Navy Veterans. Dean Smith and Jez Price shocked the visitors by storming into a 2-0 lead with wins over Colin Farge and Mick Beech, but the Legion regrouped and Andy Miles and Wayne Dodd levelled with wins over Gerry Nunn and Allen Pritchett and also won both doubles frames.

The Royal Navy Seals continue to lead the Newport Plate Trophy, despite ceding their match to the Wheatsheaf.

In-form rivals Shakespeare A claimed their second successive 6-0 win, this time at the expense of Gnosall’s Navigation. Andy Wakefield, Andy Potter, Jason Taphouse and Neil Perkins made it 4-0 in the singles and Ross Richards-Jones joined the action to make a solid clearance alongside Taphouse in frame five. Wakefield and Perkins held their nerve in rack six against Neil Holford and Scott Smith to seal an unlikely rout.

The Railway Tavern hosted Pheasant B at Upper Bar, but the visitors prevailed by the odd frame. Luke and Mike Jones and Liam Matthews stormed into a 0-3 lead with wins over Greg Quinn, Stu Morrey and Jack Dicken, but Jase Lloyd hit back for the Tavern against Tom Sayce. The fight back was short-lived, however, and Mike Jones and Sayce sealed the win against Adam Stone and Quinn in frame five.

Honours were shared in the clash between the Haberdashers and King’s Head B, but Junction A won the all-Norbury clash without dropping a frame. Hyla Marklew and Sion Richards made it 2-0 to the A team with frame wins over Ryan Morris and Mick Ashforth.

Steve Roycroft made it 3-0 and Keith Rogers seven-balled Stu Till to win the match. Rogers and Gordon Sidebottom teamed up to make it five and Richards and Steve Horton confirmed the Norbury bragging rights and a humbling score line for the Junction B team in the final rack.
