THREE-WAY TITLE RACE HEATS UP IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Newport Pool League is heading for a gripping finale after the top three teams won again to continue their battle for the title.

LSC at the Tav maintain a single-point lead over Market Drayton’s Stag after beating Junction A, 4-2, in Upper Bar. Hyla Marklew put the visitors in front against John Williams, but Greg Heathcote, Andy Lewis and Ant Heathcote hit back with frame wins over Sion Richards, Steve Roycroft and Keith Rogers. Williams and Greg Heathcote were unfortunate to lose the fifth rack to Rogers and Roycroft, but Lewis and Ant Heathcote sealed the vital points in the final frame.

The Stag cruised passed King’s Head B without losing a frame and Pheasant A disposed of bottom side Shakespeare B, despite losing two contests.

Colin Smith, Ant Allen and Jack Hooper put the Pheasant into the comfort zone of a 0-3 lead, but Kim Rigby is made of stern stuff these days and she snatched a frame off Matt Mansell to give the home team hope. Barry Smith and Jess Hilditch managed to find a way through against Mansell and Smith to make it 2-3, but Allen and Hooper were not to be denied against Jane Hilditch and Kim Rigby in frame six.

King’s Head A were undone in a shock 4-2 away defeat at the Royal Navy Club against the Seals. Dan Owen managed to beat Gary Bolton, but Ray Talbot, Ben Longstaff and Matt Bowering played well for the Seals to keep them in front of Shakespeare A in the chase for the Newport League Plate trophy.

Newport Legion continued their run of improved form with a convincing 5-1 win over the Haberdashers Arms. Andy Miles, Colin Farge, Mick Beech and Wayne Dodd did the damage in the singles frames and Miles confirmed a second seven-ball clearance of the night alongside Farge to deny a shell-shocked Steve Roberts and Paul Degg in rack five. The visitors pulled the final frame back as a consolation.

Shakespeare A avenged an early season whitewash by Pheasant B by repeating the 0-6 score against the home side in the rematch. Jason Taphouse, Andy Potter, Andy Wakefield and Neil Perkins played well to put the away side into a 0-4 lead against Simon Walley, Mike and Luke Jones and Liam Matthews and the visiting quartet rode their luck a little to clinch both doubles frames against the stunned home side.

The Royal Navy Veterans stunned the Navigation in Gnosall. Mark Kijuk and Dean Smith put the away team into a 0-2 lead over T. Garvey and Neil Holford and Gerry Nunn made it 0-3 by beating home landlord Steve Whitlock. A. Crossley got the better of Alan Pritchett to pull a frame back, but the inspired veterans prevailed in the sixth frame, courtesy of Pritchett and Nunn, after Crossley and Geoff Arrowsmith had clawed the fifth frame back at the expense of the new Navy couple, Kijuk and Smith….

Horns crushed the Wheatsheaf without losing a frame. Wayne Baker, Martyn Holford. Dai Smith and Jim Haywood put the away side to the sword in the singles and the quartet sealed the rout in the doubles.

The Railway Tavern stunned Junction B in the final match of the evening and climbed above the Norbury side to ninth on frame difference. Jack Dicken, Greg Quinn, Stu Morrey and Adam Stone stunned Steve Purves, Stu Till, Ryan Morris and Mick Ashforth in the singles and, even the introduction of Frank James in the doubles, failed to stop the Tavern winning the remaining two frames to seal an unlikely rout.
