LSC TAKE ADVANTAGE OF STAG’S DRAW TO EDGE TWO CLEAR
NEWPORT (Shropshire): LSC at the Tavern took advantage of the fact that their closest rivals, Stag and Pheasant A, played out a marathon draw and they survived a tense 2-4 away win against the Royal Navy Veterans at Bellman’s Yard.
Last year’s runners-up extended their league lead to two points against the lowly veterans but it wasn’t easy by any means. Greg Heathcote seven-balled Mark Kijuk and Paul Cartledge played well to put the away team into a useful lead, but Gerry Nunn benefited from a John Williams howler on the black and white to make it 1-2 and, when Dean Smith silenced an ashen-faced Ant Heathcote in the fourth frame to make it 2-2, it was game on. Two close frames followed, but the visiting quartet prevailed to extend their lead.
The clash between second and third ended in a long-winded draw. Wins for George Allen and Anthony Allen over Colin Smith and Ricky Leese made it 1-1, but the Market Drayton side snatched the advantage in the next two frames when Mick Manning and Neil Dale undid Ian Swinnerton and Matt Mansell. The Pheasant were not to be denied though and a brave clearance by Trevor Smith made it 2-3 and Anthony Allen took full advantage of two shots in the final tippy-tappy 50-minute frame to seal a draw for ‘Quinny’s Babes’.
Pheasant B put Newport Legion to the sword in a shock result. The visitors romped into a 0-4 win after singles wins for Simon Walley, Mike and Luke Jones and Tom Sayce silenced Andy Miles, Colin Farge, Wayne Dodd and Mick Beech. With the bricks of the former pool fortress crumbling, the home quarter regrouped to win both doubles frames, but it was a miserable night for the Legion side in what is developing into a humbling season.
Junction A entertained Horns in an all-Staffordshire clash in Norbury but the usually consistent home side were stunned after a 0-6 home defeat. King’s Head A were held to a 3-3 draw by a stubborn Wheatsheaf at Chetwynd End.
The Railway Tavern hosted the Royal Navy Seals where the Manchester United game took centre stage, but the away side snatched both points. Jason Lloyd and Stu Morrey put the home team into a 2-0 lead against Gary Bolton and Matt Bowering, but Ray Talbot and Ben Longstaff levelled the match with wins over Adam Stone and Greg Quinn. Bolton and Bowering confirmed at least the draw for the visitors in frame five and Longstaff and Talbot sealed the points against Morrey and Quinn in rack six.
The all-Shakespeare tie ended with a 4-2 win for the A team. They stormed into a 3-0 lead with wins for Andy Potter, Andy Wakefield and Ross Richards-Jones over Barry Smith and Jess and Jane Hilditch, but Kim Rigby flung the B team a lifeline with a good win against Dave Marshall. Neil Perkins returned after a seven-week lay-off and teamed up with Potter in rack five to make a useful clearance to seal the match for the A side, but an inspired Rigby reduced the deficit with a final frame win.
Junction B got the better of the Haberdashers Arms in Knighton by the odd frame and the Navigation thrashed King’s Head, 6-0, in the final match of the evening in Gnosall.
