LSC AND STAG EDGE CLEAR IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Two of the top three won their week 18 matches in the Newport & District Pool League to remain clear of fourth-placed King’s Head A.

LSC at the Tav came out tense 4-2 winners against the Haberdashers Arms in Newport, Market Drayton’s Stag prevailed 6-0 against Junction A but Pheasant A were held to a draw by the Wheatsheaf in Chetwynd Aston.

Dave Heeley elected to let Greg Heathcote break off in the first rack for the Haberdashers against LSC, but that was a decision he lived to regret. He never got another shot and that was 1-0 to the home team. But the Knighton side are improved this year and Indian pool international and LSC debutant Lak Badhan was humbled by Paul Degg, who levelled the score.

Ant Heathcote and Andy Lewis made it 3-1 with wins over Rich Bayliss and Steve Roberts, but Degg and Bayliss edged rack five against Greg Heathcote and Badhan and it took a solid clearance by Ant Heathcote in the final frame to seal both points in a tight match.

King’s Head A remain the only team to have lost just one match after they defeated their B team at Chetwynd End. Ed Keenan was in fine form to dismiss Ian Perry to put the ‘away’ side in front and Irene Whittington’s win over Chris Perry made it 0-2. Dan Owen smashed Maggie O-Brien to make it 0-3, although Lorna Phee pushed Mick Collins all the way in rack four. The A team also won both doubles racks to seal the rout.

Newport Legion had some respite from their disappointing season by beating Junction B, 2-4, in a late-night marathon at Norbury. The former champions turned up at the canal side eatery with only three players and persuaded former Junction B player Emily MacPherson to leave the kitchen to play for the away side.

Andy Miles and Mick Beech put the visitors into a 0-2 lead with wins over Mick Ashforth and Stu Till, but Wayne Dodd and MacPherson ceded their frames to Ryan Morris and Steve Purves. Beech and MacPherson won frame five to give the away side the lead and Miles and Dodd sealed both points against Till and Morris in rack six.

Pheasant B hosted the Navigation and the Gnosall side sealed a surprise win. Simon Walley relinquished the advantage to A. Crossley and Scott Smith played well to make it 0-2 with a win over Mike Jones. Luke Jones steadied the ship by beating Neil Holford, but an out-of-sorts Tom Sayce lost to Steve Whitlock and it was 1-3. Honours were shared in the doubles after Smith and Crossley had secured both points in rack five with a win over Mike Jones and Liam Matthews.

The Horns managed to see off the Railway Tavern in Gnosall with the loss of one frame and they benefited from singles wins for Wayne Baker, David Jolley and Martyn Holford.

Shakespeare B entertained the Royal Navy Veterans in Upper Bar and secured their first win of the season. Barry Smith set the home team on their way against Mark Kijuk, only for Dean Smith and Dennis Holland to redress the balance and make it 1-2 after they beat Jess and Jane Hilditch.

Kim Rigby levelled the match against Gerry Nunn heading into the doubles, but Barry Smith and Jess Hiltditch made it 3-2 and Dean Smith and Dennis Holland were humiliated in rack six by Jane Hilditch and Rigby, as the Shake sealed their triumph.

Royal Navy Seals were handed the game against Shakespeare A at Bellman’s Yard after the away side were unable to get a team together and conceded the fixture.
