LSC TAKE ADVANTAGE TO SNATCH
TOP SPOT IN NEWPORT POOL RACE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): There were two crunch ties at the top of the Newport & District Pool League on Wednesday night featuring first against fourth and second against fifth.

Leaders Pheasant A visited the King’s Head, but it was a disastrous evening for the visitors who only won one frame in a rout at Chetwynd End.

Phil Emery returned to the home team to upset Ant Allen, but Irene Whittington came unstuck against Ian Swinnerton, who levelled the match. Mick Collins edged Trevor Smith out of rack three to make it 2-1 and Ed Keenan beat Matt Mansell to push the score to 3-1. Collins and Emery sealed the win for the King’s in the fifth frame and Keenan and Whittington confirmed the result with a win over Smith and Mansell in frame six. It was a bitter blow to the Pheasant team.

Former leaders LSC at the Tav hosted Newport Legion in Upper Bar and they crushed the former league winners without losing a frame and returned to the top of the league. Singles wins for Paul Cartledge, John Williams, Greg Heathcote and Ant Heathcote sealed the two points against Mick Beech, Wayne Dodd, Paul ‘Co Stompe’ Ellis and Paul Lucas and the doubles racks were equally as embarrassing for the away side.

The Stag sealed both points against the Railway Tavern to keep in the hunt for the title after losing just one frame in Market Drayton. The home side stormed into a 2-0 lead and Jack Dicken’s win over Neil Dale was the saving grace for the away team after a disappointing performance.

Pheasant B returned to winning ways with a 4-2 victory over King’s Head B. Simon Walley and Mike Jones put the home side into a comfortable lead with wins over Lucy Hennessey and Lyn Day, but Lorna Phee and Maggie O’Brien hit back in the next two to stun the home side by beating Luke Jones and Tom Sayce. The Pheasant regrouped to win both the doubles racks to seal the two points.

Junction B and Navigation fought out an all-Staffordshire clash in Norbury and the canalsiders’ from Norbury sealed both points. Junction A managed to snatch a draw at the Wheatsheaf in Chetwynd Aston after being 3-1 down.

The Haberdashers Arms were also held to a 3-3 draw Shakespeare B in Newport. Barry Smith set the home team on their way to a useful result, only for Dave Heeley and Paul Degg to get the better of Jess and Jane Hilditch. Kim Rigby pulled the fourth rack back for the visitors against James Morris to seal the points and honours were shared in the doubles.

The Horns escaped relegation to the Newport Consolation League for the Plate Trophy by beating three-man Shakespeare A in Gnosall.

The local derby match between the Royal Navy Seals and the Royal Navy Veterans took place last Sunday to avoid a clash with the venue’s AGM and the youngsters prevailed with the loss of just one frame.
