ALL SYSTEMS GO FOR TOP THREE IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The top three continued to stroll on after week 14 fixtures in the Newport & District Pool League.

LSC at the Tav remain top On frame difference from Pheasant A after beating Junction B, 1-5, in Norbury. An in-off ruined Greg Heathcote’s recent run of form against Steve Purvis and the home side went in front.

But John Williams, Andy Lewis and Ant Heathcote made amends in the remaining singles racks to make it 1-3 with wins over Stu Till, Ryan Morris and Mick Ashforth. Williams and Greg Heathcote sealed the two points in rack five.

Pheasant A faced a tricky away clash at the Railway Tavern. Jack Dicken set the home team off to a great start by beating Ian Swinnerton, but the Pheasant rode their luck in racks two and three and Colin Smith and Matt Mansell delivered the goods. Stu Morrey levelled the match with a win over Jack Hooper, but the villagers prevailed in both doubles frames.

The Stag kept up the pressure with a 0-6 victory at the Haberdashers Arms but King’s Head A were held to a 3-3 draw by a plucky Shakespeare A. Mick Collins put the away side in front by getting the better of Andy Wakefield, Andy Potter levelled against Ed Keenan, but Irene Whittington put the away side back in the driving seat against Ross Richards-Jones. Dave Marshall pipped Ross Goodchild to make it 2-2 and honours were shared in the doubles.

Newport Legion overcame the banana skin of a home tie with the Horns. Only an unfortunate fouled black early in the third frame by Andy Miles to gift Dave Jolley with a frame win prevented the Horns from losing 1-5. Mick Beech, Wayne Dodd and Colin Farge redressed the balance and the Newport side prevailed in the doubles.

Honours were shared in the clash between thee Navigation and Royal Navy Seals in Gnosall, while Junction A were made to work hard for both points against the King’s Head B

Pheasant B overcame lowly Shakespeare B to stay in the hunt for the top five without losing a frame. Russ Woodhouse missed out on a tense first frame with Simon Walley and it was one-way traffic from then on. Mike and Luke Jones and Liam Matthews sealed the points.

The Royal Navy Veterans made life difficult for the Wheatsheaf and lost by the odd frame.

A force majeure draw was awarded for the match between Junction B and Royal Navy Seals that had fallen victim to a power outage in Norbury 14 days ago.
