GALES FAIL TO STOP LSC AND PHEASANT STAYING OUT IN FRONT
NEWPORT (Shropshire): LSC at the Tavern and Pheasant A continued to head the Newport & District Pool League after winning their respective matches against Shakespeare B and the Royal Navy Veterans on a Wednesday night when gales battered Shropshire.
Both teams whitewashed their opposition: Greg Heathcote reversed Darren Lowe’s snooker to seven-ball the Shake debutant and Tavern landlord and new signing Jon Auliffe sprung a surprise on Russ Woodhouse to make it 2-0. Ant Heathcote survived a scare to beat Jess Hilditch to make it 3-0 and Andy Lewis sealed the points with an easy win over Barry Smith. Both doubles frames held little respite for the visitors.
The Stag kept up the pressure with a useful 4-2 away win at the Navigation and Newport Legion bounced back from recent woes with a 6-0 thrashing of the Wheatsheaf. Andy Miles, Mick Beech, Colin Pink and Darren Pountney edged tense frames against Mark Hodgkinson, Al Harvey, new signing Chris Goulson and Paul Skitt for the Legion.
Goulson’s debut turned into a baptism of fire; after Beech and Miles had made it 5-0, he broke off in rack six and suffered the ignominy of watching Pink make an eight-ball clearance.
Kiing’s Head A remain in fifth position after beating the Haberdashers Arms in a blustery Knighton. Both Mick Collins and Ed Keenan lost for the visitors, but wins for Irene Whittington and Dan Owen levelled the match.
Collins and Whittington paired up to make it 2-3 and Keenan and Owen sealed two useful points for the Newport side, despite Owen making a sat nav error, getting stuck in the mud in a side road in his car on the way to the venue and having to call personnel from the Haberdashers to tow him to safety!
Pheasant B overcame the Horns with the loss of two frames in Upper Bar. Simon Walley put the home team into the lead in less than three minutes and Mike Jones doubled the advantage with a win over Wayne Daker. Dave Jolley pulled a frame back for the Gnosall side against a returning Luke Jones, but Tom Sayce sealed at least a draw for the Pheasant against Martyn Holford. The Horns won rack five to set up a tense finale, but Walley and Luke Jones sealed the two points in the second doubles frame.
A power cut in Chetwynd End nearly prevented a depleted King’s Head B being beaten 2-4 by the Railway Tavern. Jamie James stunned Greg Quinn to make it 1-0, only for Jack Dicken, Dave Bristow and Adam Stone to turn the match around and make it 3-1 with wins over Lyn Day, Lorna Phee and Chris Perry. James and Phee ensured that the outcome went to a deciding frame but an in-form Dicken stepped up to the plate to seal the points for the away side.
Two weeks after meeting in a tense cup match – where the win went to the home side – Shakespeare A and Junction A took over two and a half hours to settle a tense 3-3 draw in Upper Bar.
A useful clearance by Andy Wakefield against Hyla Marklew put the home team 1-0 up, but marathon frame wins for Sion Richards, Keith Rogers and Steve Roycroft over Andy Potter, Neil Perkins and Ross Richards-Jones put the away team in control. The Shakespeare dug deep and Jones and Potter edged a tense match against Roycroft and Richards to make it 2-3. Wakefield potted a quality black alongside Perkins to seal the draw with a win over Rogers and Gordon Sidebottom.
A power outage in Norbury forced the postponement of the game between Junction B and Royal Navy Seals. The game must be replayed within 14 days or a 3-3 score line will be awarded under a new force majeure ruling which covers the fact that neither team was at fault for the postponement.
