LSC AND PHEASANT A PULL CLEAR OF CHASING TEAMS

NEWPORT (Shropshire): LSC at the Tav were made to work hard to retain their slender lead in the Newport & District Pool League. The Tavern-based side edged Gnosall’s Horns, 4-2, on a night when third-placed Newport Legion hosted second-placed Pheasant A and were beaten by the league’s form side by a similar score line.

Greg Heathcote, John Williams, Andy Lewis and Ant Heathcote put LSC into an unbeatable position in the singles frames against Wayne Baker, Martin Holford, David Jolley and Dai Smith, but the Horns hit back in the doubles, with Martin Holford clearing well in rack six for the Gnosall side.

Pheasant A got off to a cracking start against the Legion with Ian Swinnerton beating Andy Miles, Ant Allen edging Wayne Dodd and Trevor Smith beating Paul Lucas. Legion skipper Mick Beech pipped Matt Mansell to make it 1-3, but Beech and Lucas lost to Allen/Swinnerton. Miles and Dodd pulled a consolation frame back against Colin Smith and Jack Hooper.

Market Drayton’s Stag were held to a 3-3 draw at Junction B and slipped three points behind the leading two teams and tied up points with the Legion and King’s Head A, who snatched a narrow 2-4 win at the Navigation in Gnosall. The table didn’t help Mick Collins’s cause in rack one, but Ed Keenan came to the rescue in frame two for the visitors. Irene Whittington conceded frame three and Dan Owen levelled the score in frame four before the away side won both doubles frames.

Pheasant B returned to winning ways with a 4-2 victory over the Wheatsheaf. Simon Walley and Mike Jones made it 2-0 with wins over Mark Hodgkinson and Al Harvey, but Mark Parton lost to Julian Shelton. Paul Parton got the better of Nigel Sandbrook to make it 3-1 and Walley and Paul Parton sealed the points in rack five before Sandbrook and Shelton won the final frame for the visitors.

The shock of the night came at the Royal Navy Club, where the Veterans earned a stunning 4-2 victory over the Railway Tavern.

Shakespeare A just managed to get four players for their visit to lowly King’s Head B and came away with both points. Andy Potter beat Maggie O’Brien to put the away team in control, only for Chris Perry to stun Andy Wakefield and level the match. Ross Richards-Jones edged Ian Perry to make it 1-2 and Andy Phelan won his match with Lyn Day to make it 1-3. Wakefield and Potter won frame five to confirm the points for the Shakespeare, but Chris Perry and Lucy Hennessey stunned Richards-Jones and Phelan in frame six to rescue a second rack.

Royal Navy Seals sealed both points with a crushing 0-6 win at bottom side Shakespeare B. Junction A visited the Haberdashers, but the result was not available as we closed for press.
