POTTER BY NAME, POTTER BY NATURE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): An incredible double on the black in the fifth frame of an intriguing encounter between Shakespeare A and NRBL by Andy Potter was the highlight of a night where NRBL lost their 100% record and maintained top spot in the Newport Pool League.

NRBL came into the game with six straight wins under their belt and, on a topsy-turvy night where a power cut forced the postponement of the match between King’s Head A and LSC at the Tav and the Stag in Market Drayton were gifted a 6-0 win by an AWOL Royal Navy Seals, Newport Legion were held, 3-3, in a thrilling game.

Andy Miles made light work of Ross Richards-Jones to put the visitors into the lead, but Potter snatched the advantage in a real safety marathon against Paul Lucas to level the score. Mick Beech did likewise in frame three when Neil Perkins missed a tight snooker and NRBL looked to be in overdrive when Wayne Dodd edged his rack against Dave Marshall to make it 1-3.

But a resilient Shake side came out fighting in the doubles and a stunning double on the black by Potter in an impossible situation gave him and Andy Wakefield a stunning win over Beech and Lucas. Perkins and Marshall dug deep in a marathon sixth frame to seal the draw once Dodd, who lined up with Miles, had run up short for a snooker and given Perkins two shots to make the clearance.

Pheasant B faced a tricky encounter at Junction A and they came away with the two points. Sion Richards and Keith Rogers had put the home side into a 2-0 lead over Simon Walley and Mike Jones, but the visitors hit back and singles wins for Paul Parton and Liam Matthews set up a grandstand finish. The away quartet gelled well to seal both doubles racks and the two points.

Railway Tavern and Navigation fought out a mid-table-clash in Newport and the match ended in a draw with Stu Morrey pipping Scott Smith in one of the singles racks. Pheasant A continued to close on the leaders with a 5-1 victory over Junction B at Upper Bar.

The Wheatsheaf claimed their second win of the season with a 4-2 success over Shakespeare B. Russ Woodhouse achieved his customary first frame win – with Nigel Sandbrook the victim on this occasion – but Al Harvey, J. Shelton and Paul Skitt made it 3-1 with wins over Jess Hilditch, Barry Smith and Kim Rigby. Honours were shared in the doubles.

Horns moved up the table with a 5-1 win over King’s Head B. The Royal Navy Veterans hosted the Haberdashers Arms in Bellman’s Yard, but the visitors came out on top by the odd frame. The home side are on the verge of signing last year’s winning captain Dean Smith for the remainder of the season.
