NEWPORT LEGION SQUEEZE PAST FORMER
B TEAM IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): There was no love lost between the two former Newport Legion pool teams and the old B side entertained their A team at the Pheasant on night two of the new Newport & District Pool League.
A new home table for the B team failed to prevent last year’s league runners-up from snatching a 2-4 victory over their B team rivals, although Andy Miles rode his luck in a singles rack and the new Pheasant team were justifiably aggrieved in not snatching a draw. .
Title favourites Stag hit cruise control in Market Drayton to beat Pheasant A, 5-1, to maintain their 100% start to the season, although LSC at the Tav maintain top spot on frame difference after beating a three-man Royal Navy Veterans at Upper Bar.
Greg Heathcote and Andy Lewis seven-balled Dennis Holland and Alan Pritchett to make it 0-2 and Ant Heathcote’s win over Alan Pritchett was followed by a doubles win for Lewis and Trevor to seal the points. Both other frames were walkovers for the home team.
King’s Head A were held to a 3-3 draw by a plucky Wheatsheaf side at Chetwynd Aston. Mick Collins’s win over Nigel Sandbrook was cancelled out by Al Harvey’s shock retort against Graham Tigwell. The away team made it 2-1, courtesy of Irene Whittington’s win over Mark Hodgkinson, but Paul Skitt redressed the balance against Ross Goodchild. Sandbrook and Hodgkinson put the hosts in sight of an unlikely win, only for the away team to win the final frame to seal a draw.
The Royal Navy Seals expected to get the better of the Railway Tavern at Bellman’s Yard, but were shell-shocked after Adam Stone and Jack Dicken put the visitors into a 0-2 lead. Ben Longstaff got the better of Stu Morrey to make it 1-2, but Greg Quinn’s win over Ray Talbot confirmed at least a draw for the Railway side. Dicken and Quinn secured the win in rack five and Longstaff and Gary Bolton’s sixth rack was a mere dead rubber consolation.
Shakespeare B hosted their A team at Upper Bar, but it was one-way traffic from the outset. Andy Potter’s protégé Andy Wakefield seven-balled Russ Woodhouse to make it 0-1 and wins for Dave Marshall and Neil Perkins made it 0-3 for the ‘away’ team. When Ross Richards-Jones potted the white and the black it gave Kim Rigby and the B team a lifeline, but the A team sealed both doubles frames and a 1-5 win, with veteran Andy Phelan making an impressive debut for the A team in rack five.
Gnosall’s Navigation claimed their first points of the season with a 2-4 away win at King’s Head B. Neil Holford and Bethan Kinnersley made it 0-2 to the away side, but Ian Perry pipped Scott Smith to make it 1-2. Geoff Arrowsmith sealed at least a draw for the Gnosall team in frame four and honours were shared in the doubles.
The Horns entertained Junction A in Gnosall and emerged as emphatic 5-1 victors in the shock result of the evening, while Junction B were held to a 3-3 draw by the Haberdashers in the all-Staffordshire clash at Norbury.
