NRBL A KEEP UP THE PRESSURE ON HORNS B IN POOL THRILLER
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Horns Gnosall B moved to within four points of confirming the Newport & District Pool League title with three matches remaining after defeating the Wheatsheaf, 5-1, in Gnosall.
George Allen got the better of Nigel Sandbrook to make it 1-0 and Mick Manning made it two with a win over Ian Trevor. But Al Harvey stunned Colin Pink to pull a frame back, only for Neil Dale to seal at least a draw for the home side against Paul Skitt. Dean Smith joined the fray in the doubles as the Gnosall side retained their unbeaten run and remained on course for a maiden title.
NRBL A kept up the pressure with a hard-fought 4-2 win over the Railway Tavern at Newport Legion. Andy Miles and Wayne Dodd beat Jack Dicken and Greg Quinn to make it 2-0 to the home side and a Mick Beech win over Stu Morrey made it three. Adam Stone pulled a frame back against Ant Heathcote before Beech and Jason Taphouse took nearly an hour to dispose of Quinn and Dicken to make it 4-1 in a safety marathon. Morrey and Stone won the last frame to give the score line respectability for the away side.
LSC at the Tav moved to within two points of sealing third place by beating Junction A, 4-2, in Newport. Greg Heathcote pipped Hyla Marklew to make it 1-0, although Keith Rogers redressed the balance with a win over Ben Longstaff. Paul Trevor and John Williams won the next two frames to make it 3-1 and, despite Marklew and Rogers pulling the fifth frame back to take the outcome into the sixth rack, LSC held firm to seal the two points.
NRBL B remain firm favourites to seal fourth place after getting the better of Shakespeare B at Upper Bar with the loss of just one frame. Russ Woodhouse won the solitary rack for the home team against Jack Jones, but singles wins for Rob Holt, Mike Jones and George Haveron set NRBL B on their way and Simon Walley and Liam Matthews joined forces in rack six to clinch a fifth frame.
King’s Head A and Sutherland Arms were held to surprising 3-3 draws by the Junction B and Royal Navy Club and lost ground on the top four. Mick Collins and Graham Tigwell gave the King’s Head a 0-2 head start in Norbury, but Stu Till pipped Irene Whittington to make it 1-2 before Ross Goodchild sealed at least a point for the visitors against Ryan Morris. Mick Ashforth joined the home challenge in rack five, as the Staffordshire side won both doubles racks to clinch a draw and snatch a one-point lead in the Newport Plate Trophy.
Singles wins for Andy Potter, Dave Marshall, Neil Perkins and Ben Holmes pushed Shakespeare A into a 0-4 lead against King’s Head B at Chetwynd End, but the home side hit back with Maggie O’Brien, Lyn Day and Chris and Ian Perry getting on the score sheet in two doubles frame wins.
The Navigation suffered a surprise 1-5 home defeat against the Horns A in Gnosall and the Barley Mow are reported to have whitewashed the Haberdashers, although there was no official confirmation as we closed for press.
