HORNS GNOSALL B TAKE MAJOR STEP
TOWARDS NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE TITLE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Horns Gnosall B faced a stern test of their Newport Pool League title pedigree with a tricky away fixture against NRBL B, but the Staffordshire side came away smiling after securing a 1-5 win to leave them two points clear of NRBL A with four games to play.
George Allen got the better of Rob Holt to make it 0-1, but Mick Manning was handed frame two when Mike Jones potted the white and the black. Colin Pink always had the edge over George Haveron and Neil Dale made it 0-4 with a win over the in-form Simon Walley. Honours were shared in the doubles with Holt and Jack Jones winning a consolation frame for NRBL B against Pink and Manning.
Shakespeare A, unbeaten at home record since mid November, succumbed to NRBL A by the odd frame in a tight match at Upper Bar. Andy Miles edged a close frame against Richard Hendy, but Andy Potter played well to beat Wayne Dodd to level the match.
Mick Beech never gave Neil Perkins a look in with a third frame win to make it 1-2, but a missed black by Ross Richards-Jones handed Ant Heathcote the advantage and a 1-3 lead in a messy fourth frame. Miles and Dodd edged a tense fifth rack to secure the two points when Potter missed a tricky black to make it 2-3, but Perkins and Hendy maintained their unbeaten partnership in the sixth frame to confirm a 2-4 score.
LSC at the Tav remained on course to finish third with a 2-4 win at the King’s Head. Greg Heathcote made it 0-1 against Mick Collins, but Graham Tigwell cleared off the break against Paul Cartledge to level the score. Wins for Paul Trevor and Ben Longstaff followed swiftly for LSC and honours were shared in the doubles, with Cartledge hitting form in his doubles rack against Collins and Ed Keenan to seal the two points.
Sutherland Arms were held to a 3-3 by the Barley Mow and Junction A edged ever closer to the Shakespeare A and seventh place with a 4-2 victory over Shakespeare B. Sion Richards and Keith Rogers got the home side off to a perfect start against Ross Woodhouse and Darren Lowe, only for Jess Hilditch to stun Steve Roycroft and pull a frame back. Hyla Marklew sealed at least a draw for the home side in rack four and Rogers and Gordon Sidebottom clinched the two points in frame five.
The Railway Tavern drew level with Junction B in the Newport Plate Trophy after being handed a 6-0 walkover win over the Norbury side, who were unable to field a full team and conceded the game.
The Wheatsheaf also made it a three-way tie for first place in the Plate by beating the Royal Navy Club, 4-2.
Horns A and King’s Head B met in a bottom of the table clash with the Gnosall side winning 5-1 and the Haberdashers at Knighton entertained the Navigation in the final match of the night, but lost out 1-5.
A reminder that entries for the three 2013 Newport Pool Open competitions close on Sunday, July 7th and the draw will be made on Monday, July 8th. Contact Greg Heathcote directly for entry information on 07730 441368.
