TOP THREE WIN AND HORNS B REMAIN THREE
POINTS CLEAR IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Horns Gnosall B retained their three-point lead at the top of the Newport & District Pool League with a flattering 6-0 win over Shakespeare B.
George Allen got the league leaders off to the perfect start against Russ Woodhouse and Mick Manning was fortunate to beat Darren Lowe to make it 2-0. Colin Pink and Neil Dale sealed the two points with frame successes over Jess Hilditch and Kim Rigby and Dean Smith and John Lowe joined the party in the sixth frame to confirm the rout.
NRBL A remain second and in striking distance with just seven games to go after getting the better of the in-form Sutherland Arms at Newport Legion. Andy Miles, Mick Beech, Wayne Dodd and Ant Heathcote did the damage in the singles frames against Ian Swinnerton, Trevor Smith, Matt Mansell and Jack Hooper, although Swinnerton and Hooper pulled back a consolation sixth frame. The highlight for the home side was Dodd’s eight-ball singles clearance.
LSC at the Tav cruised to a 6-0 victory over the Royal Navy Club and remain third after Greg Heathcote, Ben Longstaff, Paul Trevor and John Williams did the damage in the singles frames against Jez Price, Dennis Holland, Gerry Nunn and Alan Pritchett.
Shakespeare A squandered a 3-1 lead over the King’s Head A at Upper Bar, although they remain unbeaten at home since mid-November. Mick Collins was fortunate to get the better of Richard Hendy to put the visitors into the lead, but good potting by Andy Potter and Dave Marshall against Graham Tigwell and Ross Goodchild made it 2-1 to the home team and safety play won the day for Neil Perkins against Irene Whittington.
The visitors won both doubles frames, with Collins and Goodchild edging Ross-Richards Jones and Ben Holmes and Tigwell getting the visitors out of jail with a clever black in a tight frame against Potter and Marshall.
The Barley Mow entertained Junction A in Newport and pulled level on points with their mid-table rivals after a stunning 5-1 win. Gary Bolton, Ray Talbot and Ant Winfield beat Hyla Marklew, Steve Roycroft and Keith Rogers to make it 3-1 after Sion Richards had beaten Kim Wan Loi. Billy Holland joined the fray in rack five to seal the points.
The Railway Tavern claimed a much-needed 6-0 win over Horns A, with Dave Bristow, Jack Dicken, Stu Morrey and Greg Quinn doing the damage in the singles and Adam Stone adding to the Gnosall side’s misery in rack five.
NRBL B were unable to keep up the pressure for a top three finish after being held to a 3-3 draw by the Navigation in Gnosall. Junction B thrashed the Haberdashers to regain a one-point lead in the Newport Plate and honours were shared in the match between the King’s Head B and Wheatsheaf at Chetwynd End.
