NRBL A EDGE A LITTLE CLOSER TO NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE TITLE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL A and Horns B remain separated by frame difference after week 22 of the Newport & District Pool League.

The Legion side emerged 6-0 winners from a potentially tricky encounter at Shakespeare B and their Gnosall rivals cruised passed bottom side King’s Head B with the loss of one frame. But the results mean that the defending champions now have an eight-frame cushion at the top.

Andy Miles, Mick Beech, Wayne Dodd and Ant Heathcote did the damage in the singles racks for the away side and Jason Taphouse joined the Legion rout in the doubles.

Neil Dale blotted his copybook against Ian Perry for the Horns, but George Allen, Dean Smith and Mick Manning made no mistake in the other three frames and Dale returned to winning ways in the doubles with Smith to beat Perry and Maggie O’Brien to seal the win.

LSC kept up the pressure on the leaders with a hard-earned win against Junction B. Mick Ashforth made a useful start in his frame against Greg Heathcote and managed to hold on to give the away side a shock 0-1 lead. Paul Cartledge redressed the balance to level the score, but Paul Trevor was away with the fairies against Stu Till and the Norbury side took a 1-2 lead. John Williams steadied the ship in frame four to level the match and the home team won both doubles frames.

King’s Head A were held to a 3-3 draw by the Barley Mow. Mick Collins beat Billy Holland to make it 1-0, only for Ant Winfield to level the match with a frame win over Irene Whittington. The home side appeared to be cruising when Phil Emery and Ross Goodchild got the better of Martin Porter and Ray Talbot, but the Barley hit back to secure both doubles frames and the draw.

NRBL B were somewhat fortunate to hold Shakespeare A to a 3-3 draw at the Legion. Richard Hendy got the better of Liam Matthews to make it 0-1 and, when Andy Potter potted his final red and the black at the same time against NRBL B’s new signing George Haveron, it was 1-1.

Mike Jones also suffered a cruel in-off against Dave Marshall and the visitors regained the upper hand, but Simon Walley avenged an early season defeat by Neil Perkins to level the match in a tight frame. Honours were shared in the doubles, with Ross Richards-Jones potting a superb black in frame five to give the visitors the chance to win the match. Haveron duly held his nerve in rack six to snatch the draw.

The resurgent Sutherland Arms claimed both points against Haberdashers in Tibberton with a 4-2 win at their temporary home, the Honeysuckle.

Honours were shared in the match between Junction A and Railway Tavern in Norbury and the Wheatsheaf earned their second win of the season after thrashing Horns A at Chetwynd Aston. The Royal Navy Club held Gnosall’s Navigation to a 3-3 draw at Bellman’s Yard.
